Max Pacioretty's days as a member of the Montreal Canadiens appear to be numbered.

According to a report from The Athletic, the Canadiens won't extend Pacioretty and will look to trade him sooner than later.

In this edition of the hotstove, we discuss which team would be the best fit for his services.

I think Vegas makes a ton of sense.

Between David Perron and James Neal, the Golden Knights lost 41 goals and 110 points from last year's team. They replaced some of that offense when they signed Paul Stastny but they could still use a boost, especially with some likely regression candidates up front such as William Karlsson.

Though Pacioretty is coming off a disastrous season, a change of scenery coupled with an inevitable spike in shooting percentage should see him pot 25+ goals and return to his usual self.

The Golden Knights also have the cap space to comfortably extend Pacioretty long-term and the trade assets to entice Montreal to pull the trigger.

Things that make you go hmmm?

Regardless of the the position the Habs are taking Pacioretty is available and if I'm the Oilers I'm looking at him. It's not that he will be affordable but it's that he's what they need. Sadly I don't think they can pull it off but his experience and leadership could be helpful to a team like Edmonton that needs some stability on it.

Can it happen? Probably not but Chiarelli should be seeing if he can at the very least.

Sean Maloughney

My bet is on the Vegas Golden Knights. The Knights have been rumoured have been in on many of the big name UFA players this off-season including Karlsson. The team still has cap space to spare even after whatever William Karlsson ends up receiving.

Regression has to be a concern for McPhee and company after the miraculous run the expansion team had last season. Bringing Stastny and Pacioretty onto the roster this off-season would help bring more proven talent onto this roster that could step into more prolific roles should other players falter.
