The Tampa Bay Lightning are already a contender for the Stanley Cup. The Erik Karlsson rumors are still going strong and that will only further cement them as one of the favorites. However, there have been some speed bumps along the way after it was rumored to be a done deal the other night.

Could Eugene Melnyk, the ultimate cheapskate, actually be helping the Penguins? It doesn’t take a CSI investigation to come to that conclusion. It only takes basic logic. What is one variable missing in the Tampa Bay rumors that has shown up in other ones? The answer is Bobby Ryan. I believe it is entirely possible Pierre Dorion and Steve Yzerman came to an agreement before Scrooge nixed it because there is still a possibility of Bobby Ryan being offloaded. Tampa is already working magic behind the scenes to fit in Erik Karlsson. They can't be in this sweepstakes if Bobby Ryan is going to be involved. Vegas would become a favorite if Bobby Ryan is driving the owner's decisions.

Melnyk doesn’t really care about the on-ice product. He’s the most hated non-political Cheapskate Melnyk might be doing the Penguins a favorperson in Ottawa. He will eventually be forced out and will take a deal to sell the team. He’s already getting offers. Before he does sell he is going to maximize his money down to the penny and part of that is losing 30M owed to Bobby Ryan. He’s not looking for the best hockey return he’s looking for the best money return.

If true, he’d be doing the Penguins a big favor.
