For me it's the New York Islanders and I'm not sure it's close.

They lost the face of the franchise in John Tavares, their best defensive blue liner in Calvin de Haan, and they followed it up by inflicting plenty of damage on themselves.

They handed 31-year-old Leo Komarov, who is already on a clear decline, a four-year deal worth $3 million.

They followed that up by signing Valtteri Filppula and Tom Kuhnhackl. What do all these players have in common? Their teams are significantly worse with them on the ice in terms of shots, goals, and expected goals (based off shot and shot location).

Call me crazy, but I think loading up the team with inefficient point producers and possession anchors is not a strategy that will pay off.

Honorable mention goes to the Vancouver Canucks for handing out long-term deals to role players like candy to kids on Halloween.

The situation with the Islanders is a mess but my vote goes to the team who actively made poor decisions on Free Agency...The Canucks.

Antoine Roussel and Jay Beagle getting a 4 year 12 million dollar deal...and reportedly also with NTC? The Canucks should have earned some good will back from their fan base with the drafting of Hughes but these two deals actively hurt a rebuilding team like the Canucks. This team still has no scoring past Boesser and Horvat and on top of that fans will be forced to turn away anytime the Beagle and Roussell line steps on the ice.
