They Are What They Are

When you get right down to it, it's hard to be truly disappointed with the Flyers.

They are what they are. Which is, a very inconsistent, very average hockey club in which virtually every player is having a poor season simultaneously.

The notable exceptions being Wayne Simmonds, Ivan Provorov, Travis Konecny and Radko Gudas. Jordan Weal hasn't been around long enough and the same with Valterri Filppula. They should not be grouped with the others.

The Flyers talked a pretty good game on Wednesday night after their 4-0 demolition of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Yes, they played well and played with a sense of purpose and wouldn't be denied.

The Pens bring out the best in the Flyers. Much like the Rangers. But the Penguins were a beat-up, tired group that flew from Calgary to Pittsburgh to Philly, coming in on a five-game road trip with injuries so ... you weren't getting the Penguins "A" game that night.

The Flyers talked tough about the wild card and not giving up and making this a race and most of us thought in the back of our minds, 'they're gonna go into Jersey and get thumped.'

And they did.

The Flyers don't play well at Prudential Center and the Devils have given them fits over their last two coaches, regardless.

What you saw in living HD on Thursday was the kind of Jekyll-Hyde Flyer performance you have seen all season, outside of the club's 10-game win streak which seems like eons ago.

Flip a coin. Heads, they play well. Tails, they go belly up.

It was all tails on Thursday night.

They'll probably come back with a solid effort Sunday night against not-so-mighty Carolina.

By Sunday night, they could be even farther back in the wild card than they are right now which is 6 points.

Fans can wail and curse and pound their heads on the glass behind the net in frustration but none of that is going to change the sad fact that the Flyers are exactly who they are: a very inconsistent, very average team with a lot of guys having very sub-par seasons, including both their goalies.

Viewed from that light, what did you really expect?
