Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports that Senators owner Eugene Melnyk has given GM Pierre Dorion the green light to make a move "to get the team to the playoffs." The Sens are currently second in the Atlantic Division, but only four points ahead of the last Eastern Conference wild card spot.

THE BUZZ – The Sens are dealing with injury problems and need to stock up on forward depth to improve their chances of a post-season berth.

Ottawa added Tommy Wingels from San Jose when they lost Clarke MacArthur for the season with concussion issues, but in the last week they have lost Mark Stone and Mike Hoffman to injuries.

Although Melnyk has given the go-ahead to get reinforcements, Dorion is likely to pursue rental options they can get for second level prospects or lower draft picks, instead of sacrificing high picks or prospects like Thomas Chabot or Colin White.

Look for the Sens to kick tires on players like Radim Vrbata or P-A Parenteau, who make in the neighborhood of $1 Million.

On this week’s edition of TSN’s Insider Trading, Bob McKenzie, Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger report on the latest rumors of possible deals before the March 1 trade deadline.

LeBrun says that Dallas winger Patrick Eaves is one of the most sought after players on the trade market, not just because he has scored a career-high 21 goals, but because of his $1 Million salary with many teams having little cap room.

THE BUZZ – Eaves is traditionally not a big scorer, but the low salary is going to drive up the value of the 32-year-old winger.

The Stars have other assets (Patrick Sharp, Johnny Oduya, Jiri Hudler) that they will be shopping over the next seven days, but Eaves could bring back the highest return, perhaps as much as a first round pick.

McKenzie says that the Red Wings are nearly in ‘sell’ mode and have been fielding offers for pending UFA defenseman Brendan Smith. Smith has a $2.75 Million cap hit, but Wings GM Ken Holland wants to see how much it will cost to get the 28-year-old re-signed before he trades him to the highest bidder.

THE BUZZ – Smith does not put up big offensive numbers, which may limit the return for the blueliner, but there are so few defensemen available before the deadline, that Holland could get a second or third round pick.
