Doc Emrick says goodbye, but remains America’s hockey voice

My fondest memory of Doc Emrick was when I met him in person for the first time at Madison Square Garden when the New Jersey Devils played the New York Rangers. When the game was over, my friend and I left our seats and we saw Doc Emrick at the broadcast table. There were many Devil and Ranger fans around to greet him and what struck me about him was that he talked to every fan even though he was real busy. Like a nervous autograph seeker, I asked Doc for his autograph and ironically enough, he signed the Rangers promotional giveaway that night, which was a box of a Sam Rosen and John Davidson bobble head doll.

The impression I got as a fan is that Doc Emrick is genuine and a real nice person.

Through the years, Doc spoiled Devils fans as a great broadcaster and as our play-by-play guy we proudly called our own. But now, Doc is exclusively America's hockey voice as he artfully describes every play out on the ice like he has done in the past.

We will miss having Doc Emrick as a Devils broadcaster and not having conversations with him at the Fire Lounge where the Devils broadcast team is located at the Rock. I know our Scoop Cooper has told us tons of wonderful stories about Doc and his love for the language. The word "professional" is one that best describes Emrick's career and what every broadcast journalist should strive to be.

Best wishes Doc and hope to see you broadcasting for NBC at the Rock when the Devils are in the Stanley Cup finals!
