Currently, the NHL GM’s are living it up in Florida for the annual GM meeting. There was a time when newspapers would send their reporters down for these meetings…back when newspapers were making a lot more money… This used to be the trip of the year for hockey reporters.. a lot of golf and a lot of information.

I talked to two GM’s yesterday and it appears this year at the meetings the concept of three on three overtime for 10 minutes is taking hold. People liked it a lot in the 4nations and it’s just a more exciting way to finish a game, and also more of a “team way” to finish the game.

The other interesting thing about a 10 minute overtime is more players have to be involved because if it runs long guys are gonna get tired…. In a five minute overtime you can basically swap two lines back-and-forth if you wanted to..

There’s also gonna be talk about the “going backwards play” that we see in the 3-3 OTs.

We all know this play…..Your team is in the offensive zone, circling, when one of their players text the puck out of the offensive zone and circles back to their own defensive zone to facilitate a line change… very box lacrosse….There has been some discussion that teams shouldn’t be able to go back over the red line intentionally in an overtime…sort of like basketball…

In my opinion, there’s no doubt that 10 minute overtimes would be more exciting…not sire what I think about the mid-ice rule….But i totally understand why it is being considered.
