Penguins announce rotating crew for color commentary |

The Penguins have released more information about their upcoming television broadcast team. There will not be a set color commentator this year and instead will be a rotation of three
Phil Bourque and Colby Armstrong were much talked about options and they will indeed be part of the rotation. I feel like we will see more of Colby Armstrong on the TV side because Phil Bourque is still doing the radio side of things. I didn’t recall a lot of buzz about Mike Rupp joining the television side of things, but he will round things out.
My preference for this role is for the person to be honest about the on-ice play and to incorporate modern terminology and philosophies into the broadcast. Controlled entries and exits should be a common talking point. I don’t want to hear about plus/minus and goalie wins. I want to hear about expected goals and high-danger save percentage. The information is available and it is not hard to explain or understand. I personally don’t think this is a high bar to clear yet so many broadcasts still fall short. It disrespects the viewers.
Time will tell how things will go with the new crew. One thing is for sure, the old crew wasn’t going to change their ways.
