UPDATE: TSN's Darren Dreger reports: all signs now point to the search wrapping up in the very near future with Brad Treliving being named as the new GM.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have vacancies in upper management with the dismissal of Kyle Dubas, the resignation of Jason Spezza, and the non-renewal of the contracts of Toronto Marlies of head coach Greg Moore and assistant coaches A.J. MacLean and John Snowden. The club now has another vacancy to fill, as Leafs assistant coach Spencer Carbery was named the head coach of the Washington Capitals on Tuesday.

The 41-year-old joined head coach Sheldon Keefe’s staff in 2021 after winning AHL coach of the year with the Hershey Bears and most notably directed the Leafs power play last season. Carbery was considered a hot commodity who was a finalist for the Boston Bruins job last season before going with Jim Montgomery, and after Toronto’s elimination earlier this month was interviewed with Anaheim and New York.

Currently, the Leafs coaching staff is in a state of limbo until Team President Brendan Shanahan hires a new general manager. Interviews continue to take place, with former Calgary GM Brad Treliving the only candidate that most will agree has been interviewed. Other names like Peter Chiarelli, Marc Bergevin, and Jason Botterill may be in the mix, but another experienced GM’s name popped up that would be an intriguing choice for Toronto.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman on a recent 32 Thoughts podcast also mentioned the name of former San Jose Sharks GM Doug Wilson.

The Hall of Fame blueliner served as San Jose GM from 2003 – 2022 and was well respected as one of the steadiest and most effective managers in the league, but Wilson was forced to take a leave of absence for health reasons in 2021 and then retired in 2022.

Recently the 65-year-old’s name has popped in relation to the Team President opening in Philadelphia and if hired, he would be a fantastic get for the Leafs and Shanahan after what can only be described as a calamity the last few weeks.
