For those who missed it, Mazur and Wallinder signed their ELC and will report to GR. The fan base needed some injection of excitement, this is good news that takes some of the sting of a brutal stretch.

Game Summary:

Going into the 3rd, it was tied 3-3. Wings had blown a 3-0 lead. Perron scores, but the Pitt answers. 4-4. Perron scores two more to complete the hat trick, Larkin added an empty net goal for a 7-4 win. 3rd period was something special. Larkin had a goal and 2 assists, including a nice cross ice pass for one of Perron’s tally.

It is good to see the Joe jumping. Part of me felt a little sick when the arena music turned to “Beat it” when a Tiger’s player was shown on the big screen. Yeah, Petry was wearing Pitt gear, that doesn’t change what he did for this city. It means he’s supporting his son and that’s a very cool gesture.

Another cool gesture is LaLonde going at it with the refs enough to get kicked out. That seemed to energize the bench, and it was a boost that was badly needed. I’m not for coaches making life hard on the refs, but this one seemed to bring about something special. It may cost him a few thousand bucks though.

This team can look so different period to period. First frame, they score 3 goals on 10 shots and hold Pitt to 9. Second period, Pitt outshoots Detroit 14 -4 and ties it up. 3rd Period, Detroit scores about 5 minutes in, Pitt ties it up quickly. Then Perron gets 2 more for a 3rd period hat trick and Larkin gets an empty net goal to seal the win. The place sounded like people were having a blast.

I really like what Perron brings when he’s not going to the box. He is creative, and can make plays. Larkin is also becoming a better play maker. Raymond had some rough spots and I think his sophomore year is teaching some tough lessons. Still, glad to have him and look forward to his growth. Seider continues to skate well with the puck and have flashes of solid hockey I.Q. Berggren made a heck of a move that drew a penalty for Detroit as he broke in for a scoring chance.

In all honesty, I want the season to end with some positivity. We have a couple kids who just signed their ELC (see above) and thanks to HenryHockey for pointing out that Kasper looks to be heading to North America. Lots of youth, and a draft where we potentially have 2 firsts and 3 seconds (one first is conditional). I love having Lidstrom on board as defense will continue to be scouted and nice to see Z looking like he’s feeling ok. His back took a beating.

Let me know if you enjoyed the roller coaster, or if a 7-4 game is not your thing. For sure Pitt isn’t feeling great about this outcome as they fight for playoff positioning.

First Period Detroit goals:

At 11:03 (1 second left on power play) Berggren opened the scoring on a triangle bang-bang pass play that saw Veleno get the puck to Czarnik who was on the right side, and right to Berggren for a quick wrist shot in. 1-0 Det

34 seconds later the Wings strike again. While the first goal was being announced, Detroit was working the puck in the Pittsburgh zone. Seider took a shot from the middle near the blue line and Copp was net front for a tip in. 2-0 Det *Suter added as 2nd assist

At 16:07, Kubalik got his 19th as it looked like Lindstrom scored on a snap shot from above the circles but it redirected off of a piece of Kubalik. Oesterle with 2nd assist. 3-0 Det

Shots: 10-9 DET
Score: 3-0 DET

Second Period Detroit goals:

No Detroit goals in 2nd

Pitt got on the board at 4:40. 3-1 DET

Third Period Detroit goals:

At 5:05 Detroit regained the lead as Perron took a cross ice pass from Larkin and shot from the lower left faceoff dot with a beautiful wrister and plenty of flex as he shot on his off wing. 4-3 DET

Pens tie it back up at 5:26. 4-4

16:30 into the third and just about 7 seconds into a power play Perron scored to regain a one goal lead. Just under a minute later Perron scored again for a hat trick. Seider and Copp on assist on the first goal, Larkin and Oesterle on the second. 6-4 DET

With 37 seconds left Larkin gets an empty net goal for his first of the night, 3 points. 7-4 DET
