Wrap: Flyers outplay but lose to Devils
The Philadelphia Flyers played one of their most well-structured games of the season but it amounted to nothing but a regulation loss in a game they never led. The New Jersey Devils defeated the Flyers, 3-2, at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday evening.
The Flyers outplayed the Devils for most of the night, but they had no margin for error because of their ongoing struggles to score. The Devils were more opportunistic, and the Flyers paid dearly for a tentative start to the third period. The game was lost by the Flyers in roughly a five-minute span with a couple of miscues that ended up in their net.
The Flyers significantly outplayed the Devils in a scoreless first period. Philly also had an edge in play in the second period but never led. The two teams traded off goals by Fabian Zetterlund (5th goal of the season, PPG) and Travis Konecny (9th, PPG).
In the third period, two early goals by Dawson Mercer (6th) and Jack Hughes (13rth) propelled the Devils to a 3-1 lead. The Flyers drew back within 4-3 on a Lukas Sedlak goal (3rd) through traffic but couldn't find an equalizer. A potential tying goal by Joel Farabee was immediately waved off for goalie interference by Morgan Frost.
Carter Hart saw just 18 shots for the game, stopping 15. Akira Schmid got the win for New Jersey, stopping 31 of 33 shots.
The Flyers actually won the special teams battle on this night: something that has rarely been the case over the last month. Philly went 1-for-3 on the power play. The Devils were 0-for-3.

The Flyers will have a complete off-day on Sunday. On Monday, they will hold a morning skate before hosting the Colorado Avalanche at the Wells Fargo Center at 7:00 p.m. ET.
