The Toronto Maple Leafs continued to follow the same plan that has yielded success since losing defenseman Morgan Rielly last week, putting together another solid road performance and relying on the goaltending of Matt Murray in a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Monday.

Mitch Marner extended his consecutive point streak to 17 games with the game-winning goal. Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and Rasmus Sandin also scored for Toronto, who have earned points in nine straight games (7-0-2). Murray once again stood tall in the Leafs net, earning his fifth win in six starts since return to action two weeks ago with a 42-save effort against the Wings.

I thought our goaltending was outstanding again, as it has been all trip.” Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said after the game. “We defended way too much because of our inability to break out, but especially in periods two and three, we really didn’t give up the big chance. There were a lot of shots from the perimeter and a lot of long shots.

They got a tip on one that went in in the third there, but by and large, I thought the guys did a good job of allowing Matt to see the puck. With the way he is playing, if he’s seeing it, he’s stopping it.”

Matthews appears to be shaking out of his struggles at the end of the month, with his second straight multi-point game, and goals in consecutive games. The contest also marked the first NHL point for defenseman Mac Hollowell, who assisted on Matthews first period marker. Nylander also continues to be red-hot, taking over the club lead from John Tavares with his 13th of the season and scoring a goal in his third straight.

“Hollowell comes up and plays his first NHL games out here on this trip. I think he’s done a good job.” Keefe said. “It is a good sign for him and well deserved with the work that he has put in. He takes advantage of his opportunity, comes in — in tough circumstances — and finds a way to give us good minutes and be part of the wins.”

Toronto returns home on Wednesday to play San Jose before heading back on the road for two more against the division rival Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars. The Sharks play the first of back-to-back games in Montreal on Tuesday with starter Kappo Kahkonen starting. Former Leaf James Reimer is injured, so it is likely that former Leaf Aaron Dell will get the start on Wednesday.
