Half an hour before puck drop, the seats are far from packed at the former Auditorium the Verdun now the Centre 21.02. Today is the first day of the PWHPA Secret Dream Gap Tour in Montreal and two games are on tap. At 13:30, Team Scotiabank is taking on Team Sonnet Insurance which means that Daoust, Johnson, Carpenter, Turnbull, Shelton and Maschmeyer are taking on Jenner, Bunton, Knight, Ambrose and Zandee-Hart to name a few. This promises to be an exciting game but the crowd isn’t there. Why? Well probably because hardly anyone knows the event is happening.

At a time when the women’s game needs as much help and publicity as it can get, it’s a struggle to get mainstream media to publicize or cover the event. Journalists want to find out about Marie-Philip Poulin and her new found role with the Habs, but they’re not talking about her career as a hockey player, unless it’s to cover the Olympics. It’s almost as if for 4 years, the women’s game doesn’t matter and then, when it’s time for the Games, the world awakens from its deep slumber and gets pumped up for the upcoming Canada vs USA match-ups. It doesn’t have to be this way, and it shouldn’t be this way either.

Later today, at 16:00 Team Adidas will take on Team Harveys, Nurse, Coyne-Schofield and Kessel will therefore battle Poulin, Eldridge, Clark, Rattray and Rougeau. Usual rivals will become teammates and showcase their incredible skills on the ice. Hopefully, a lot of people turn up to watch the game or catch it online on CBC or Radio-Canada, but it would also be great if tomorrow in the sports pages of La Presse, there was more than a tidbit piece about the ladies still looking for a real professional league to play in.
