It was a surprise victory over Igor Shesterkin and the New York Rangers for the New Jersey Devils. And the young Devils team will try it again tonight at the Rock.

Getting Outscored On The Power Play

The Devils power play are getting the same bad results like last season. Giving up many sloppy shorthanded chances has been a big issues for the Devils in recent years. You can’t always blame poor goaltending. The Devils are getting too fancy with the puck and the “no look” drop back passes has failed miserably. The Devils are better off moving the puck through the neutral zone and just dump the puck in.

What is interesting is the Devils were great four-on-four. I am being sarcastic here but do you decline the penalty like in football? Obviously not but this problem needs to be addressed immediately.

Nathan Bastian

I was sad when he was left unprotected during the expansion draft. But excited now that he returned last season and has been using his size and strength around the net. His goal against Shesterkin last night even surprised himself. If Bastian keeps crashing the net both on special teams and on even strength, he potentially hit 20 goals this season.

Nico Hischier injury

First, it was because of cramps and dehydration. Now it is a hamstring injury a few days later. I agree that Nico should take some time off to heal. But the messaging is confusing. How do you go from cramps to a hamstring injury? You might as well call it a lower body injury. Hope the captain gets better soon.

Erik Haula Is Winning Faceoffs

Haula won 17 of his 22 faceoffs against the Rangers. That is a 77.3% face-off percentage and this is what the Devils could sure use in the regular season. With McLeod and Haula taking faceoffs, puck possession will serve the Devils well.
