After a day off yesterday, Martin St-Louis’ team took to the ice in Brossard this morning before taking off for Toronto and the lines and pairing for tonight’s game were revealed. Just like the Leafs, the Canadiens will not be sending a lot of established vets to battle but it will once again be a roster full of young players to evaluated. Camp stand-out Owen Beck is back in again, alongside Mesar and Mitchell Stevens while Juraj Slafkovsky will get first line duty with Rem Pitlick and Joel Armia. Emil Heineman will get his first opportunity to play. On defense, Justin Barron is also back, but finds himself on the third pairing while Jordan Harris remains on the right of the second pair, but this time with Arber Xhekaj, a duo that has looked very good in scrimmages.
After the morning skate, St-Louis confirmed that Slafkovsky was not meant to be in the line-up initially, but that he’s filling-up for Jonathan Drouin who is battling the flu. No disrespect to Drouin here, but I think everyone will be happy to see the young Slovak in the line-up, he needs as many reps as possible to get used to the North American game. As for Beck and Mesar, the coach explained their presence in the line-up by saying that they are still young and can still go back to the juniors, so it’s important to evaluate them early, the closer we get to the season, the closer the pilot wants to get to using his NHL roster.
In net, Samuel Montembeault and Kevin Poulin will be splitting up the work. Even though St-Louis said after last game that no decision had been made goaltending wise and that it was still possible for Primeau to be in the NHL this season, I strongly believe this is not the case. I believe the declaration was made because he hasn’t had a talk with Primeau about the best path for him development wise, but also to light a fire under Montembeault and tell him that he hadn’t earn an NHL spot. The head coach also said that he expects that Montembeault’s floor should be higher this season, since he had the chance to acquire a lot of NHL experience last season. Both Josh Anderson and Nick Suzuki took to the ice today and it's expected that Suzuki will be practicing with his teammates from Monday.
As for the Leafs, Matthews and Marner will not be part of the proceedings tonight, just like captain John Tavares who’s currently injured. William Nylander, Alex Kerfoot, Mike Rielly, Mark Giordano and Matt Murray will be the most established players in tonight’s match-up. The puck is set to drop shortly after 7:00 PM and the game will be broadcasted on both RDS and Sportsnet 1.
Après une journée de congé hier, l’équipe de Martin St-Louis était de retour sur la glace ce matin à Brossard avant de s’envoler pour Toronto et on a pu y observer les trios et paires defensives qui seront à l’oeuvre ce soir. Tout comme les Leafs, les Canadiens n’enverront pas beaucoup de vétérans établis dans la mêlée, mais le CH comptera de nombreuses recrues à évaluer. La revelation du camp Owen Beck en sera à son deuxième match sur une ligne avec Filip Mesar et Mitchell Stevens alors que Juraj Slafkovsky se retrouvera sur le premier trio en compagnie de Rem Pitlick et Joel Armia. Emil Heineman aura aussi sa première opportunité de jouer. À la ligne bleue, Justin Barron est également de retour, mais se retrouve sur la troisième paire défensive alors que Jordan Harris est encore sur la deuxième paire, mais cette fois avec son partenaire des matchs simulés, Arber Xhekaj, un duo qui a très bien fait d’ailleurs.
Après l’entraînement matinal, St-Louis a confirmé que Slafkovsky ne devait pas jouer au départ mais qu’il remplace Jonathan Drouin dans l’alignement puisque celui-ci est aux prises avec une grippe. Sans vouloir manquer de respect à Drouin, je crois que tout le monde sera content de revoir le premier choi xen uniforme, il a besoin du plus de temps possible pour s’acclimater au jeu nord-américain. Quant à Beck et Mesar, l’entraîneur a expliqué qu’ils sont jeunes et peuvent encore retourner dans le junior et qu’il est donc important de les évaluer plus rapidement, plus la saison se rapproche, plus le pilote veut avoir un alignement près de celui qu’il utilisera pendant la saison régulière.
Dans le filet, Samuel Montembeault et Kevin Poulin se partageront le travail. Même si St-Louis a dit qu’aucune décision n’avait été prise à la position de gardien et qu’il était possible que Primeau commence la saison à Montréal, je crois fermement que ce n’est pas le cas. À mon sens, il s’est exprimé ainsi parce qu’il n’a pas encore eu de discussion avec le principal intéressé quant au meilleur parcours pour son développement, mais aussi afin de motiver Montembeault à faire de son mieux pour gagner son poste. Finalement, il a dit s’attendre à voir une certaine progression chez Montembeault considérant l’expérience qu’il a acquis dans le circuit Bettman l’an dernier. Tant Josh Anderson et Nick Suzuki ont patiné ce matin et on s'attend à ce que ce dernier pratiquer avec ses coéquipiers dès lundi.
Quant aux Leafs, Matthews et Marner de sont pas de la rencontre, pas plus que John Tavares qui est présentement sur la touche pour 3 semaines. William Nylander, Alex Kerfoot, Mike Rielly, Mark Giordano et Matt Muray seront les joueurs les plus établits du côté torontois dans le match de ce soir. La mise au jeu devrait avoir lieu peu après 7:00 PM et le match sera diffusé sur RDS et sur Sportsnet 1.
