This was the first game of what could be a very long season for the Canadiens. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: this season will be devoted to development and there will be growing pains (and more likely a lot of them). Just so we do not all end up on antidepressants, we’ll need to learn to find the upside. Yes, the Canadiens lost and failed to threaten the Devils’ net for most of the game but there were still some positives out there.
First and foremost, I am loving this new skilled and mobile blue line for the Canadiens. Guhle, Harris and Barron can all move well with the puck and that’s really refreshing after years of watching a smothering defensive style. That being said, I believe this game further highlighted the fact that Guhle and Harris have the upper hand on Mattias Norlinder and on Justin Barron to a lesser extent. Watching events unfold tonight, it was easy to see why Kent Hughes is taking extension with Jake Allen, there were turnovers and the netminder was there keeping the fort and being a reassuring presence in the net. He was perfect, stopping the 18 shots he faced in 30 minutes.
He wasn’t the only vet who was in good shape though, Cole Caufield is already in mid-season form unleashing 5 shots on net, some of which were absolute rockets…it’s a shame that the Pocket Rocket nickname belonged to Henri Richard. Playing on his line, Mike Hoffman also did well and managed to take 3 shots while also back-checking, something we’ve not seen all that often from him. At the back, Mike Matheson showed that he can be a steadying presence and join in the attack as needed. A short note on Kirby Dach, he didn’t have a disastrous game faceoff wise and that’s already a win (44% success rate).
As for the rookie forwards, Owen Beck just keeps on standing out. He was the Canadiens’ best center in the face-off department tonight with a 58% success rate (it was 75% after 2 periods) and made several good plays, also ringing a hard shot of the post…twice. As for Filip Mesar, he very nearly managed to tie things up in the dying seconds of the game but the Devils netminder just wasn’t having any of it. He was also frustrated on a premium opportunity on the power play. Without the puck, he’s a real poison on the forecheck, he may not be big, but he is tenacious and just won’t be denied. After the game, he admitted that everything seems to go faster on the smaller ice in North America and that he’s currently adapting to it all.
Former Hab Tomas Tatar was instrumental in the Devils’ win, scoring their first goal and came over to talk to both Slafkovsky and Mesar after the game. The Slovak connection is strong and Mesar said that they were both going out with Tuna after the game. The Habs will be back in action Wednesday night against the Maple Leafs in Toronto
C’était le premier match de ce qui pourrait être une très longue saison pour le CH ce soir. Je l’ai déjà dit, et je vais le redire : cette saison sera consacrée au développement et il y aura des erreurs de jeunesse (et elle seront probablement fort nombreuse). Question qu’on ne finisse pas tous sur les antidépresseurs, on devra apprendre à voir le bon côté de chaque match. Oui, le Tricolore a perdu et n’a pas réussi à menacer le filet des Devils pour la majeure partie du match, mais il y avait quand même de nombreux points positifs.
D’abord et avant tout, j’adore cette nouvelle brigade défensive habile et mobile pour les Canadiens. Guhle, Harris et Barron, ils peuvent tous bien bouger avec la rondelle et après avoir regardé un style défensif étouffant pendant des années, c’est rafraichissant. Cela étant dit, je crois que ce match a démontré une fois de plus que Guhle et Harris sont nettement en avant de Norlinder et un peu moins en avant de Barron point de vue développement. Après avoir vu le déroulement du match de ce soir, c’est facile de comprendre pourquoi Kent Hughes envisage de donner une prolongation de contrat à Jake Allen. Il y a eu plusieurs revirements et le gardien était là à tenir le fort, une présence rassurance dans le filet. Il a été parfait arrêtant les 18 tirs auxquels il a fait face.
Il n’était pas le seul vétéran en grande forme ce soir cependant, Cole Caufield fonctionne déjà à plein régime, prenant 5 tirs au but, certains étant de vrais missiles, c’est dommage que le surnom de ‘Pocket Rocket » appartienne déjà à Henri Richard, ça lui irait comme un gant. Jouant sur son trio, Mike Hoffman s’en est aussi très bien tire, réussissant 3 tirs au but et revenant même en défensive, quelque chose qu’on ne voit pas assez souvent de sa part. À l’arrière, Mike Matheson a montré qu’il peut être la présence stable et se joindre à l’attaque au besoin. Quant à Kirby Dach, il n’a pas connu une soirée désastreuse au cercle des mises au jeu (taux de succès de 44%) et cela est en soit une victoire.
Enc e qui concerne les attaquants recrues, Owen Beck continue de se démarquer. Il a été le meilleur centre des Canadiens dans le département mise au jeu avec un taux de succès de 58% (c’était 75% après deux période) et il a touché le poteau avec un lancer retentissant à deux reprises. Quant à Filip Mesar, il est passé bien près de créer l’égalité en fin de match, mais le gardien des Devils a fermé la porte. Il a également été frustré sur une opportunité en or en avantage numérique. Sans la rondelle, il est un véritable poison en échec avant, il n’est pas gros mais il est tenace et il n’accepte pas de se faire dire non. Après le match, il a admis que tout semble aller plus vite sur une surface réduite nord-américaine et qu’il est en train de s’adapter.
L’ancien Hab Tomas Tatar a joué un grand rôle dans la victoire des siens, marquant leur premier but et après le match, il est venu parler à ses compatriotes Slafkovsky et Mesar. La connexion Slovaque est forte et Mesar a confié aux journalistes que les deux jeunots avaient des plans avec le vétéran pour le reste de la soirée. Les Habs seront de retour en action mercredi contre les Leafs à Toronto.
