2013 Norris Trophy winner and former New Jersey Devils defenseman P.K. Subban announced his retirement today at the age of 33.

Subban started his career with the Montreal Canadiens and became an instant fan favorite. He was affectionately nicknamed “Primetime” and became involved in many children charities in the Montreal community.

In 2014, Subban signed an eight-year extension with the Habs, which made him the highest paid defenseman at that time. But two years later, he was traded in a blockbuster trade to the Nashville Predators in exchange for All-Star defenseman Shea Weber.

Subban got to play in the 2017 Stanley Cup finals with the Predators, only to lose to the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games. He finished the postseason with 12 points in 22 playoff games.

During the second day of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, then Devils GM Ray Sheri traded Steven Santini, Jeremy Davies and two second round picks to the Predators in exchange for Subban.

Subban brought the swagger with smoke and full drum line at his introduction press conference. He wore a Ric Flair robe and giving big “Woos!” Shout outs to Devils fans. He brought the hype and star power to New Jersey along with his highly publicized relationship with then fiancé Lindsey Vonn.

Although he was a recognizable name throughout the NHL, Subban was not able to help the young Devils team get into the playoffs and often talked about in trade talks. To his credit, Subban immersed himself in the New Jersey community like he did with Montreal and Nashville. He won the King Clancy Trophy this year for his humanitarian leadership on and off the ice.
