Penguins to get "new" familiar threads this year

The Penguins are going to have some new threads this year. Teams around the league have started to release their new jerseys officially. San Jose and Carolina did so earlier in the week and both teams are looking good





I think the Penguins are going to be looking good, too. They are going back to the robo-Penguin from the 90’s.




Robo Penguin. The Pigeon. Call it what you want: The Pittsburgh Penguins’ old “new” logo is coming back.

The Penguins’ 2022-23 reverse retro jerseys will feature the logo Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr wore throughout most of their 1990s run together, multiple industry sources told The Athletic. The logo, first introduced for the 1992-93 season, will appear on the front of jerseys worn by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin for a yet-unspecified number of games in 2022-23.


In a vacuum I liked those jerseys. I didn’t like how they totally ditched the skating Penguin and I don’t think Mario Lemieux did, either. Probably the reason they haven’t used them again until Mario sold off the team to FSG.

I don’t buy into the karma or bad luck vibe of those jerseys. The three-peat was denied and it was the year they changed jerseys, but the Penguins had a horrible owner and Mario Lemieux’s health was always spotty even before the jersey change. Both more problematic than a jersey change.

I am pretty sure I’ve owned more Penguins jerseys with this logo than not over the years. Some had blank backs from the middle school days. Over the years I’ve acquired Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, and had a customized Darius Kasparaitis one made. I like that they are bringing these back. The skating Penguin should always be the primary logo. It is one of the best in the league. It is OK to have the robo-Penguin in an alternate jersey. In fact, I would go as far to say the Penguin robo-Penguin logo is still better than quite a number of team’s logos. It is a sharp looking jersey.

Now if they could only put the robo-Penguin back on the shoulders of the ‘Pittsburgh’ jerseys like it belongs.
