I am reviving an old series I had here on hockeybuzz, called, “The Great Hockey Debate.”
Today’s topic is one of my absolute favorites: “What is the best NHL line you ever got to see?”
What makes a great NHL line? I have always felt that that you know you love an NHL line when you are watching the game and you are completely aware of when their next shift is about to hit. That has always been the test for me. Here are some of my favorites thatI was fortunate enough to see play live.
I will start with a classic here in Philly…it’s also cool when the line has a nickname..
“The Legion of Doom.”
This line consisted of Eric Lindros, John Leclair, and Michael Renberg. They were as dominant as any line I ever witnessed, combining strength, speed, and pure talent. Had they played a few years later, without the clutch and grab, I can’t even imagine the kinds of numbers they put up.
Gretzky-Kurri-Tikkanen
I was fortunate to be in the Spectrum in Philly the first night this magical trio was put together…They were unreal with the puck and teams had to give them all sorts of space or they would completely take advantage of a defense…However, giving them all sorts of space was a huge problem as well.
Trottier-Bossy-Gillies.
The early 80s were impressionable years for me, and this line owned them. Bossy is matched only by Ovechkin when it comes to gifted goal scorers that i have witnessed. Trottier was absolutely one of the sneakiest and craftiest players ever to play. Gillies kept up with the other two and kept everyone else away from them.
Lemieux-Jagr-Stevens. (The Sky Line)
You thanks two top ten players all time and Stevens….and you cause all sorts of issues. Mario and Jagr were virtually impossible to stop. It was pure magic.
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson…
Some would put the Alex Semin version on here, but I really prefer the issues Wilson gives other teams…Ovechkin and Backstrom don’t need any other scorers with them!
