If you were hoping to get the identity of the Canadiens’ 1st overall pick today, you will have been sorely disappointed with today’s presser. Right now, Kent Hughes says that the Canadiens themselves do not know who they will be picking since they will be starting to meet up with all of their scouts tonight and they want each and everyone of them to have a voice. This stance is hardly surprising as the Habs would have nothing to gain by showing their hand right now. In short, Hughes has said that everything is possible, they could trade the pick or draft depending on what happens. He did state that if the draft was happening tonight though, the Canadiens would be using the pick and that there are 3 players between which they are debating. While he didn’t name them, it’s safe to assume that they are Shane Wright, Juraj Slafkovsky and Logan Cooley. The GM also added that it’s more likely that they’ll be trading their 2nd 1st round pick to move up in the draft order than it is that they’ll trade the 1st overall.

While this doesn’t tell us all that much about how the chips will fall Thursday night, there were still some interesting tidbits of information here and there. Firstly, Hughes doesn’t intend to base his pick on who the best player is right now, for him, it’s important to draft the player who will be the best long term, the one who will have the capacity and willingness to learn and approve. He cites Brad Marchand as a good example of a gifted player who was willing to put in the work to get better. Secondly, the Habs have been talking to prospects not just to assess them as players but also as people to get a sense of how well they would be equipped to deal with the Montreal market. Special advisor Vincent Lecavalier has been in touch with Shane Wright to discuss what it’s like to be the guy that has the “potential first overall pick” label and how he’s dealing with it. The organization also wanted to get a sense of how he was coping with that label and how it might have affected him. Lecavalier has yet to speak with the other leading candidates, but it’s planed that he will do so. Finally, Hughes doesn’t want to put too much importance in Wright’s last season which fell short of meeting the expectations many had for him, “It’s not about this past season, it’s about where he’s going”.

A few other topics were mentioned as is always the case with media availability and here’s a quick rundown. Alexander Romanov is expected back in North America this week and his return is not expected to cause any issues. As you might now, Flyers’ player Fedotov has been imprisoned in Russia and will be made to complete his military service, meaning he won’t be able to play next season. Unlike Fedotov, Romanov did not break his contract with his KHL team to come over to North America, which might be why no complications are expected. While CSKA Moscow wanted to sign him to a new contract, Romanov was adamant that he wanted to play in the NHL at the end of his deal and refused any extension, even though it meant that he wasn’t used as much by CSKA in his last season with the team.

As for Jeff Petry, there is a chance he could still be a Hab next season, Hughes has been clear, he will try to accommodate his trade request, but he will only do so if it makes sense for the team. Petry is a big minutes muncher on the blue line and the Canadiens will not trade him if it puts them in an uncomfortable position. In other words, it sounds like the defenseman did not withdraw his trade request. However, if he isn’t traded, Hughes expects him to be back in Montreal and play like he did in the last third of the season.

There is still no news on Carey Price, Hughes said that when there’s good news about the goaltender, he will hold a press conference solely on that topic while laughing. He did clarify that Price did not have another operation though, the only procedure he underwent was the platelet-rich-plasma injection. When Price told the press about that, he said that he would only know how well it worked when he would start testing his knee intensely later on this Summer and obviously, that hasn’t been done yet.

Finally, Hughes agreed that Luke Richardson’s departure for Chicago leaves a hole in the coaching staff and that he will have to be replaced. He added that Martin St-Louis has already started talking to candidates and that Jeff Gorton and himself would take to the ones St-Louis puts forward. If they find the right fit, there’s no reason why the replacement couldn’t be named soon.
