Quick Hits: June 28, 2022

1) Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher and assistant general manager Brent Flahr will meet with the press tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. EDT to discuss the upcoming NHL Entry Draft. Fletcher will also likely to be asked to discuss the timeline of Joel Farabee discovering that he needed neck surgery, along with an update on Ryan Ellis.

2) After the press conference, Flahr will join Jason Myrtetus and me to record a Draft-themed edition of Flyers Daily. It will be the kick-off episode of Scouts Week on the podcast. Upcoming episodes before the Draft will feature Flyers European-based scout Joakim Grundberg, WHL-based scout Mark Greig and player personnel director Alyn McCauley.

3) Flyers ambassador of hockey Bob "the Hound" Kelly surprised longtime Flyers fan Bob Leap and his family on Monday by personally delivering a variety of Flyers swag and a customized Flyers jersey to Mr. Leap. Kelly wanted to show his support to Mr. Leap, who is waging an ongoing battle with cancer.

4) The Flyers and Flyers Charities are launching a new initiative for the 2022-23 season: Each player on the roster will be paired with a charitable or community initiative. In coordination with the Flyers organization, players will select the causes they want to support, and players with existing relationships with a charitable or community initiative will be able to continue working with those programs. Players will finalize their selections prior to the start of the season, and throughout the year, they will make both public and private appearances to volunteer their time and support their chosen causes.

"As someone who came to Philadelphia as an 18-year-old and is now raising a family in this city, I feel very connected and lucky to be a part of this community," said Flyers forward Sean Couturier. in a statement "As a team, we are fortunate to have the ability, and are extremely proud, to give back to a fan base who is so passionate, loyal and truly cares about us."

5) In Memoriam: Willie Huber (Jan 15, 1958 - June 28, 2010)

he late German-born offensive defenseman Willie Huber was born in Strasskirchen on Jan. 15, 1958 but raised in Canada. Huber was a seasoned NHL pro of 645 regular season games and three other teams -- most notably the Detroit Red Wings -- by the time the Flyers acquired him.

With the Flyers riddled with injuries and otherwise depleted blueline depth during the 1987-88 season, the Flyers acquired Huber from the Vancouver Canucks on March 1, 1988, in exchange for left winger Paul Lawless and the return of Vancouver's previously acquired 1989 fifth-round pick (later traded to Edmonton and used on the selection of future Flyers/Phantoms center Peter White).

Huber had a productive stretch run for Mike Keenan's team, posting four goals and 13 points in 10 games. He dressed in five playoff games, posting a minus-three rating and zero points. Huber was scratched in the fifth and seventh games of the Flyers' first-round loss to the Washington Capitals.

A free agent in the summer of 1988, Huber could not come to contract terms with the Flyers and sat out the entire 1988-89 season. He then elected to retire at age 31. Huber settled in Hamilton, Ontario after his playing day, working in facility operations.

On June 29, 2010, Willie Huber suffered a fatal heart attack and passed away at age 58. He was survived by wife, Dawn, and step-daughter Brittany.
