The Toronto Maple Leafs got started on their offseason work of signing their own free agents, as the club locked up defenseman Timothy Liljegren to a two-year, $2.8 million contract extension ($1.4 million AAV).

The 23-year-old was selected 17th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft, spent two years with the Marlies, won a Calder Cup in 2018, and split time between the AHL and NHL in 2020 and 2021 before earning a full-time job with the Leafs last season.

Liljegren had 23 points (5 goals, 18 assists) in 61 games and appeared in two playoff games for the club, and finished 11th in the voting for the Calder Trophy.

The youngster took a number of strides forward in his development playing alongside veteran Mark Giordano after the trade deadline and it is likely that combo will be reunited next season.

With Liljegren signed, Leafs GM Kyle Dubas still has to resolve the contract issues of pending UFA Ilya Lyubushin and RFA Rasmus Sandin. It is possible that veteran Justin Holl (with one year left at $2 million) will be moved before the NHL Draft in Montreal to give the Leafs more cap room.
