Elation for Lehky, Consternation for Perry

The 2021-2022 season is officially over as the Colorado Avalanche got to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup after a 2-1 win over the Lightning in Tampa last night. John Cooper and co. fell short in their 3-peat quest and former Hab Corey Perry, who signed a 2-year pact with the Bolts after losing the final against them 2 seasons in a row, became the first player in history to lose 3 consecutive cup finals with 3 different teams.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the handshake line, Arturri Lehkonen was all smiles. Kent Hughes told the story of how he told him he had been traded on trade deadline day, he started the conversation with: “If you had to pick where you’ve been traded, where would you want it to be?” To which Lehkonen replied: “Colorado” and Hughes confirmed: “Colorado it is”. It was the perfect landing spot for the Finn and a great trade for Avalanche GM Joe Sakic.

A Canadiens’ 2nd round pick for the Habs in 2013, Lehkonen spent 6 seasons in Montreal, playing in the bottom six more often than not. From the moment he arrived, “Lehky” became Brendan Gallagher’s best friend, probably because the 2 forwards had the same work ethics and dedication to their team, they referred to themselves as “the Alliance” and from his own admission, Gallagher has been closely following Lehkonen’s playoffs journey with the Avs this spring.

Nicknamed “Almost Lehkonen” at times with the Canadiens for his lack of finish, he found himself on Colorado’s second line for most of the cup conquest. To win the Stanley Cup, you need to win 16 games and Lehkonen scored 4 game winning goals during the Avalanche epic playoffs journey. Even though it was Cale Makar who deservedly received the Conn Smythe trophy, there’s no denying that Lehkonen played a major role in Colorado’s success.

Now that he’s a restricted free agent, it’s easy to imagine that Lehkonen will sign a multiple year’s contract with the Avs. After all, GM Skaic gave up a great right shooting defenseman prospect in Justin Barron and a second-round pick to acquire number 62, and after these impressive playoffs, he’ll no doubt want to keep him around. While it’s always hard for fans to see one of their former players triumphs elsewhere, it’s impossible not to be happy for Lehkonen who was nothing by class over his 6 years of proudly wearing the Sainte-Flanelle. There’s nothing left to say but: good stick Lehky.

With the new Stanley Cup champions now crowned, all the attention will turn to the NHL draft that is set for July 7th and 8th in Montreal and free agency that will kick off on July 13th.
