When the Canadiens gave permission to the Hawks to speak to assistant coach Luke Richardson for their head coaching role, the writing was on the wall, we knew chances were he would get the gig. A seasoned NHL coach, Richardson started his career behind the bench with the Sens as an assistant and after 3 seasons, he was named the head coach of their Binghampton affiliate team, a position he stayed in until the end of the 2016-2017 season, when he went back to the NHL as an assistant coach this time with the New York Islanders where he stayed a single season before joining Claude Julien’s staff as an assistant coach in Montreal.
He was immediately tasked with handling the team’s defensemen, having been a d-man himself in the NHL for 22 seasons. Poised and always in control, Richardson was well respected by all behind the Canadiens’ bench, and he had no problem stepping up to the plate when Covid sidelined head-coach Dominique Ducharme in last season’s playoffs.
Having been with the Canadiens for over 5 years, Richardson will be missed as he had a wealth of knowledge to pass on to the young and coming defenders that will be patrolling the Canadiens’ blue line this year. However, his departure will allow newly minted head-coach Martin St-Louis to bring abord someone of his own choosing. While he did say in his post season conference that he didn’t think he’d bring anyone new on, the hole Richardson leaves behind will have to be filed one way or another. The official announcement should come in the next few hours or days from the Blackhawks.
Quand les Canadiens ont donné la permission aux Blackhawks de parler à Luke Richardson pour leur rôle d’entraîneur chef, il semblait que les dés étaient déjà jetés et que ce n’était qu’une question de temps avant qu’il obtienne l’emploi. Un entraîneur d’expérience dans la LNH, Richardson a commencé sa carrière derrière le banc à titre d’assistant entraineur à Ottawa et après 3 saisons, il s’est vu confier les rênes de la filiale de Binghamption, y occupant le rôle d’entraîneur-chef jusqu’à la fin de la saison 2016-2017. Il effectua par la suite un retour derrière le banc d’une équipe du circuit Bettman à titre d’assistant entraineur avec les Islanders de New York pour une seule saison avant de se joindre à l’équipe d’entraîneur de Claude Julien à Montréal.
Dès son arrive, il fut mis en charge de la brigade défensive du Tricolore ayant lui-même patrouillé la ligne bleue d’équipe de la LNH pendant 22 saisons. Calme et toujours en contrôle, Richardson était très respecté de tous chex le CH et il n’a eu aucun problème a relevé le défi lorsque l’entraîneur-chef Dominique Ducharme a été mis KO par la Covid lors des dernières séries.
Ayant été avec le CH pour plus de 5 ans, l’absence de Richardson se fera sentir, lui qui aurait eu tout un bagage de connaissances et d’expériences à partager avec les jeunes arrières qui porteront la Sainte-Flanelle cette saison. Cependant, son départ permettra au nouvel entraîneur chef Martin St-Louis de mettre en poste son propre choix. Bien qu’il ait dit en fin de saison qu’il ne s’attendait pas à recruter d’autres adjoints, le vide laissé par le départ de Richardson devra être comble. L’annonce officielle de l’embauche de Richardson a titre d’entraîneur chef des Hawks devrait être faite dans les prochaines heures ou les prochains jours.
