The NHL announced the remainder of their awards on Tuesday in Tampa, and Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews was the big winner, adding a Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award to his trophy case. The 24-year-old Matthews was the first Leaf since Ted Kennedy in 1955 to win the league’s most valuable player award, receiving 119 first-place votes and 1630 points from the members of the Professional Hockey Writer’s Association, compared to 29 first-place votes and 1111 points for Edmonton’s Connor McDavid and was selected the league’s most outstanding player by his peers.
I think it's a tremendous honor to wear the blue-and-white and represent the city of Toronto and wear the Maple Leaf every night," Matthews said. "I’ve really enjoyed my time in Toronto and it’s been special. I love every single guy on that team, the management staff. The whole organization from top to bottom is first class and I feel really fortunate to play there.”
Matthews was also named to the NHL’s 1st All-Star team, along with Vezina Trophy winner Igor Shesterkin, Norris Trophy winner and runner-up Cale Makar and Roman Josi, winger Johnny Gaudreau and teammate Mitch Marner. Marner on the strength of a career-high 97-point regular season beat out former junior linemate Matthew Tkachuk for his second-straight 1st Team All-Star appearance.
Leafs winger Michael Bunting finished third (877 points) in Calder Trophy voting for the most outstanding rookie in back of winner Moritz Seider and runner-up Trevor Zegras, and was named to the All-Rookie team along with Lucas Raymond, Alexandre Carrier, and Jeremy Swayman.
Defenseman Morgan Rielly finished 11th in voting for the Norris, receiving two fourth-place and four fifth-place votes, and Timothy Liljegren finished tied for 11th with one fourth-place and three fifth-place votes.
