During yesterday’s media availability, Kent Hughes was asked about the appointment of a new captain for the Canadiens, and we can deduce a few things from his answer. Firstly, there won’t be a player vote. The GM said that it wasn’t a decision he would take unilaterally, he will discuss with the coaching staff about who would be best suited for the role, and they did already speak to the players to get a sense of who would be a good candidate. Secondly, he mentioned that it was important to put someone in that role who had the necessary leadership qualities but also the maturity to handle that assignment in a market like Montreal.

Not so long ago, I would have said that Brendan Gallagher was a slam dunk to be the Canadiens’ 31st captain, but I don’t think so anymore. Things change fast in hockey and Gallagher is still under contract with the team for 5 more years with a cap hit of $6.5 million. Providing Hughes doesn’t manage to trade him, by the time he reaches the later years of his contract, he won’t be as important to the team and will be paid too much for what he still brings to the table. You don’t want to give the C to someone who you will have to take it from down the line, see Dustin Brown with the Kings for instance, that was messy.

Another viable option could also be Josh Anderson who’s also under contract for 5 years but is a couple of years younger than Brendan Gallagher and has a lower cap hit. Anderson has showed a lot of leadership this past season and looks to be all-in with the Habs, but it’s still a possibility that he could be traded in this rebuilt, though I think they should keep hold of him since this team doesn’t have any other real power forwards. Still, if you give him the C, you tie yourself up for some time.

What the Habs need right now is a short-term captain, someone to keep the seat warm while Nick Suzuki matures and comes into his role as the first line center of this team. Hughes said it himself, they want someone who has the maturity needed to handle the task. This is not a dig at Suzuki, not at all, but he’s already got his plate full learning how to be a star player in this league, it wouldn’t be fair to add learning how to be a captain while wearing the C to his to-do list. The answer is simple: Joel Edmundson. At 29, Edmundson has got the maturity needed and is under contract for 2 more years with the team. Furthermore, even if he was injured for most of the year, players kept on and on about how big of a presence he was and how much leadership he provided. Playing alongside him, Suzuki will get a chance to see how he handles himself and what he does as a team captain. When his contract is up in 2 years, the young Habs defense corps will have taken plenty of experience and they probably won’t need to retain him then, paving the way for the handing off of the proverbial torch.

So, if it was up to me, Edmundson would get the C while Suzuki would get one of the As and Gallagher the other. Gallagher has earned the right to keep the letter, he’s given everything for this team and bleeds red, white and blue. Also, I believe his contract makes it unlikely that Hughes will manage to trade him so making him an alternate does bring some stability. As for Suzuki, that course of action tells him that this is his team and Edmundson is only keeping the seat warm for him.
