Coaching Changes in Florida

Yesterday the Florida Panthers announced they have relieved assistant coaches Ulf Samuelsson and Derek MacKenzie of their duties behind the Cats’ bench. No real surprise here if you ask me. After an epic postseason collapse and a horrendous PP display - following the best season in franchise history - house cleaning was in order.

Though Samuelsson and MacKenzie are gone, the fate of head coach Andrew Brunette remains to be seen. George Richards at Florida Hockey Now cited Elliott Friedman saying that there’s the possibility of Florida keeping Brunette around and allowing him to bring in his own coaching staff, with Friedman saying the following on The Jeff Marek show:

“It sounds like it’s trending in that direction, but I don’t want to say it’s a guarantee.”

With the likes of Barry Trotz, Peter DeBoer (no thanks), Bruce Cassidy, etc., looking for jobs, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Panthers did some interviewing - in fact it would be frustrating if they didn’t. That’s nothing against Brunette. I’m a fan of him, but they should explore all available options this off-season and see/hear some different philosophies.

What do you guys think? Would you like to see Brunette back? Or would you like to see someone else behind the bench?
