Take This Call

On the report by Elliotte Friedman from TSN stating that the Blackhawks are taking calls on Kirby Dach, it's best to not read into it too much at this point. Reports like this on any player can mean different things during the early offseason.

General manager Kyle Davidson has claimed that anyone except Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, and Seth Jones is up for grabs. Davidson may merely be taking calls that come in but isn't proactively pawning off Dach to find the highest bidder.

In other words, Davidson is of course going to talk to whoever is calling. It's doubtful that he's screening calls from certain general managers or denying a call if a certain player is why other teams are phoning in to inquire.

As a general manager, it's in Davidson's best interest to gauge the market for any and all players. If he doesn't like what's being offered up, then just say no and stand pat. But there could be suitors who may pitch offers he can't refuse.

For a youngster like Dach who still hasn't reached full potential and may explode in due time, patience is key to let him blossom. Yet, it may be hard to reject a chance to enhance the rebuild to gain a few futures for the price of one.

And that's the critical factor: ensure any trades contribute to forward momentum of the rebuild rather than either setting it back a notch or hastening the timeline to a hurry-up version that veterans like Kane and Toews seem to prefer.

A trade scenario to be wary of is the hockey-trade variety where a slow-growing young player like Dach is exchanged for another youthful counterpart in the same predicament. Is it better to keep investing in Dach rather than someone else?

A more favorable deal to consider would be packaging Dach to another team to bring back at least two of a high draft pick, blue chip prospect, and/or current roster player who can play at a top 6 forward level or top 4 defense level.
