In what was another wrong decision by team president Cam Neely and general manager Don Sweeney, the Bruins announced Monday the team has relieved Bruce Cassidy of his duties as head coach.

“Today I informed Bruce Cassidy that I was making a head coaching change. After 14 years working with Bruce, this was an extremely difficult decision. I want to thank and acknowledge Bruce for all his work and success with the Bruins organization," Sweeney said in a press release.

"His head coaching record for the Bruins is impressive, and we are appreciative of Bruce both professionally and personally. After taking some time to fully digest everything, I felt that the direction of our team for both this season and beyond would benefit from a new voice. I want to wish Bruce, Julie, Shannon and Cole much success as a family and with their future opportunities."

Sweeney will address the media Tuesday morning at Warrior Ice Arena.

I went into detail a bit last week on why firing Cassidy is not the answer. Clearly, Cassidy is falling on the sword for the failure Neely and Sweeney have been.

I know there's some speculation that the core players of the group are not big fans of Cassidy, leading to his firing, but if that is indeed true, then how do they feel about Sweeney failing to provide them with the additional tools they've needed year in and year out, costing them another crack at winning a Stanley Cup?

With Cassidy out of the picture, what does this mean for players such as Jake DeBrusk, Patrice Bergeron and even David Krejci?

I'll have another deep dive into this decision, and the mess the Bruins next head coach will be walking into tomorrow after Sweeney addresses the media.
