For weeks we have known that the Seattle Kraken would be sellers at the trade deadline and finally we have the first domino to fall, though perhaps not the one everyone expected. Calle Jarnkrok late on Wednesday afternoon was dealt to the Calgary Flames in exchange for a 2022 second round draft pick, a 2023 third-round, and 2024 seventh-round pick. Ultimately this is a good move for the Kraken as Jarnkrok is a UFA at the end of this season and unlikely to be re-upped by the team.

Jarnkrok will join his cousin Elias Lindholm, though it is unlikely the duo plays together much. Jarnkrok is a solid bottom six forward who is a decent 5 on 5 contributor but hasn't pushed possession nearly as well as he did in Nashville. That could simply be a result of the fact that the Kraken have not been nearly as good as Nashville but perhaps the 30 year old is simply on the decline as well.

I would lean more towards the former though.

In his first 21 games with Seattle after dealing early with COVID, Jarnkrok put up a mere 3-6-9. He was bounced around the lineup as were many players but he did spend ample time with skill guys like McCann, Schwartz and Eberle to no avail.

In the new year though, Jarnkrok picked things up and since has gone 9-8-17 in his last 28 games. Calgary is hoping this is the player they will receive and I think they should be optimistic. Jarnkrok strikes me as exactly the kind of player that would fit in immediately with a Sutter coached team.

Ultimately it is a good deal for both sides and Ron Francis is finally doing what he should have months ago, trading NHL players for as many picks as possible to start to draft and develop the future.
