Previous Post: Oesterle’s first as a Wing OT winner

Before delving into tonight’s wrap up, just some quick thoughts on Jeff Petry. If 3 or 4 years ago the opportunity to grab him on a deal were there I’d be all over it. His entire family is in Michigan now (post Christmas) and that would certainly seen to signal that Detroit or CBJ could be in the mix. With the salary and the current right side mix, he would certainly add depth but I’d much rather see something on the left side. Maybe that would be the play. We’ll see, just something to keep an eye on.

Game Summary: whether it’s fair or not, I blame a game where we lose by 2 empty net goals on the coach. It’s immature, it may be a symptom of my mental sickness/head injury. But, could this team gotten to OT if the goalie hadn’t left the crease?

January was awful. February 50/50 so far. So, was this team ready to start and other teams weren’t? I heard a pro athlete talk about how the mentality of the game destroys players. So many games, so much travel. You don’t have a life, and at this point in the year you’re pretty much always hurt (hence the pain killer addictions). Larkin and Bertuzzi are leading the way and showing exceptional mental strength this year. This is the part where we need our young players to grow up. At the same time, we have players that may need to hang up their skates.

Montreal is open for business, Arizona is as well. Chicago has a few pieces that will dealt. I don’t know if Yzerman will get a player or just some picks. Getting Vrana back will certainly be a boost. Any young players that can get a few games in (coming from Europe) will be welcome. Right now, we’re just seeing more of the issues that are keeping us from post season contention. (Thank God Evander Kane went to EDM. Hopefully that locker room can get him under control as he’s already scored a couple).

During the break I may re watch my DVDs (stands for digital video discs for those who’ve never used one. Forget about my VHS, I can’t find the player). Players have roles. 2 top lines that are similar and two bottom lines that are quite a bit different (back in the day any way). I overvalued some players (LaPointe, I’m such a fan boy for that dude) and didn’t appreciate how good we had it.

I still think this season is a step forward. Right now, it’s just a painful run that reminds us of how much further there is to go.

First Period Red Wings’ goals:

Rasmussen gets his 5th of the year as he drives the net and gets ahold of a Zadina rebound (his 9th apple). Rasmussen has matched his career high in assists this season and needs 3 goals to match his season high for those. Zadina is 5 points off of his season high with 13 points in 44 games (as opposed to 19 in 49 games).

No Wings’ goals in the second

Third Period:

Tyler Bertuzzi and Dylan Larkin have combined for 85 points in 47 games. Bertuzzi’s 22nd tally of the year had Larkin’s handprints on it (2nd assist) as the scrappy forward got a stick on a long range shot from Lindstrom to tip it in. Add Raymond to the equation and you have 56 goals in 47 games, not bad at all for the top line. :

Joe Veleno showed the right kind of patience on his 4th goal of the season. His “lack” of celebration showed a lot of maturity as well. I think what frustrates me the most about JV is the “potential”. His exceptional status, his jr career, but an inability in the pros (or in Europe last year) to find his overall game. I have similar complaints with Zadina, but his work ethic and defensive work have at least show a solid commitment. JV is a great “kid”. (I’m 46, he’s a kid to me). His speed is fantastic. Just need that “something” to click to get a couple of solid 3rd liners out of those two. Well done on this one JV.
