Hello All,

You have heard the rumors by now, the Capitals have interest in acquiring goalie Marc-André Fleury.

Should they? Lets take a poll:

QuizMaker

Personally, I would be shocked to see this ever come to fruition given his time in Pittsburgh. The Capitals goaltending this season has been inconsistent to say the least. I am 100% in favor of the Caps acquring a goalie this year...but maybe someone a little cheaper. Lets check out how Vitek Vanecek, Ilya Samsonov, and Marc-André Fleury all stack up against other goalies in the league who have played a minimum of 10 games played:

Vitek Vanecek:
Record: 9-6-5:
.912 SV% ranks 25th
2.47 GAA ranks 13th

Ilya Samsonov:
.907 SV% ranks 37th
2.77 GAA ranks 26th

Marc-André Fleury:
Record: 13-13-3
913 SV% ranks 22nd
2.76 GAA ranks 25th

Vanecek has clearly been the guy as of late for the Caps and has looked pretty sharp in the process. He has a few clunkers here and there but he is solid...for now. The Capitals lost Vanecek last year in the playoffs due to injury and were forced to go with Ilya Samsonov and Craig Anderson. Inconsistent and subpar goaltending among other things ultimately doomed the Caps last year in the postseason. If the Caps want to take a real run at the Cup, yes they need to acquire a goaltender like Fleury. My fear is that no matter what the Caps do, they will still be ousted in the first round if they make the playoffs. The metro is loaded and you are looking at any of the following potential teams as a first round opponent...Rangers, Hurricanes, Penguins. Absolutely loaded.

Not sure how the deal gets done but maybe something like the Caps pay 50% of the remaining salary from the contract, throw in a draft pick and a player/prospect.

Honorable Mention:
Braden Holtby is on the end of a 2M deal and is a pending UFA at the conclusion of the season. For goalies who have played a minimum of 10 games, Holtby ranks 15th in SV% with .917 and 18th at GAA with 2.60 goals against per game. Not bad. I would just hate to just rent Holtby for a year only for him to leave again but man it would be cool to see him back in Washington.

Thoughts?!
