The Los Angeles Kings fell to the New York Rangers tonight, losing 3-2 in a shootout.

Los Angeles started the game strong, outplaying the Rangers in the first period. The Kings were forechecking hard to create turnovers for some good chances and outshot New York by an 11-3 margin. However, Brendan Lemieux threw a hit from behind on Ryan Lindgren and the Rangers ended up converting on the power play in the dying seconds of the frame to go ahead 1-0.

After the Kings continued to press in the second period, Blake Lizotte came down on a solo rush and picked a corner with a nice shot to beat Igor Shesterkin. As the Rangers started to take the momentum after that, Barclay Goodrow took a high sticking penalty, sending the Kings to the power play. In the ensuing man advantage, Anze Kopitar got the puck to Alex Iafallo in front, who backhanded a shot past Shesterkin, giving the Kings a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

The Rangers sustained a ton of early pressure in the third period but couldn’t convert and the play evened out after that. Later in the period, however, Barclay Goodrow was able to tip in a shot from Artemi Panarin, tying the game. Neither team could break the tie and the game went to overtime.

New York got some excellent chances in overtime, however, Jonathan Quick came up big multiple times, sending the game to a shootout. After the first four shooters couldn’t convert, Anze Kopitar scored with a nice, low shot, putting pressure on Artemi Panarin. With Panarin needing to score, he slowed down and put the puck five-hole on Quick to extend it.

After the next round of shooters were stopped, Quinton Byfield scored on his first NHL shootout attempt. However, Alexis Lafreniere managed to go to the backhand to slide the puck under Quick to extend the shootout once again. Then after Arthur Kaliyev couldn’t score, Adam Fox made a nice move to deke out Quick, scoring on an excellent backhand shot to win it for the Rangers.

It was another solid effort for the Kings, who were the better team at even strength for a lot of the game. They did allow another power play goal, but managed to kill four of five penalties overall.

They took three of four points on a back-to-back to start their road trip and while it would’ve been great to get the win, I think the effort was certainly there. I also thought that despite limited usage, Quinton Byfield looked good with the Kings tonight and was able to carry the puck and avoid traffic for some somewhat difficult entries.

The Kings’ next game comes on Thursday against the New York Islanders.
