The Canadiens just announced that Kent Hughes is the new general manager. He becomes the 18th GM in team history. Hughes will address the media on Wednesday with Geoff Molson and Jeff Gorton.

I've spoke about Kent Hughes in another blog already: About Kent Hughes but here are my first thoughts.

As soon as the announcement was made, and even before then, some people were already complaining that Hughes is an anglophone. Now let's get something straight, yes English is his first language but Hughes was born around Montreal and is fluent in French. The Canadiens are already limited in their search, I wish people and a certain faction of the media could stop being so darn picky. What we have here is a successful man, fluent in French who walks away from a hugely successful business to take charge of the Montreal Canadiens: be happy.

As for those who are not keen on having an agent as a GM, just think about Pierre Lacroix. He was a successful agent that moved on to become the Avalanche GM and he brought aboard the likes of Patrick Roy and Raymond Bourque, the missing pieces that took Colorado to the Cup, first in 1996 and then again in 2001. Of course, the Avs had a better core but do not underestimate Hughes, he's joining forces with Gorton to win and nothing else. Like Marc Bergevin before him, Hughes got a 5-year contract.
