The New York Islanders’ three-game winning streak was snapped today, falling 2-0 to the Washington Capitals.

The Capitals opened the scoring just five minutes into the game, as Tom Wilson ripped a nice wrist shot past Semyon Varlamov. The Islanders surrendered some pretty good chances after that and did give up a power play opportunity but Varlamov made some important saves and it remained 1-0 after the period.

The Islanders gave up the better chances again in the second period, with Washington controlling a lot of the play. However, the Islanders did get a couple of power plays and managed some good chances there, but couldn’t tie the game.

In the third period, the Islanders did get some pretty good opportunities to get on the board, with Oliver Wahlstrom notably generating some good chances in close. However, an issue was the volume of chances wasn’t high enough and Alex Ovechkin sealed the deal with an empty net goal with 10 seconds left.

The Islanders were outshot pretty badly and while the gap in chances wasn’t necessarily as bad as the gap in shots, New York still struggled to create enough chances, especially at even strength.

It marks the end of a five-game stretch where New York went 4-0-1. Hopefully they’re able to brush this off and keep climbing back into playoff contention – that said, support up front would be a huge help in that and this game highlighted that reality again.

New York's next game comes on Monday against the Philadelphia Flyers.
