Lidstrom’s role becomes official

Summary: I get it now. If you’ve ever googled video of someone who is colorblind getting glasses that fixes the issue, it is a tear jerker. For the past nearly 30 years I’ve watched and loved this team. Once Lidstrom retired, things derailed. It’s impossible to explain the pain. If you’ve ever driven through parts of Monroe or Detroit where factories standing falling apart, you have an idea. My dream is to drive Route 66, but I know that so much of it is like a ghost town. To watch the remains of a once vibrant area echo as the buildings crumble is to sum up the human experience. Time waits for no one.

However, where one thing passes, another is born. In the same hospital where bitter tears are wept for a loved one departing tears of joy flow for a newborn child. This season, I’ve experienced both. I can’t watch the games, but I can follow. God has blessed me with the ability to type with my eyes closed. Twitter graciously posts the goals so that I can share them with you. In some ways, I’ve been given a new lease on life. In others, I continue to lose some battles.

But tonight, friends. Tonight, good things happened for our Detroit Red Wings. Tyler Bertuzzi scored his 18th goal and is a point per game player! Lucas Raymond had another multipoint night! The top line is scoring more than a goal per game. Filip Hronek has 20 points. Namestnikov has 10 goals and 9 assists. Fabbri hit double digit goals again.

Is it possible that a team with some of the worst lottery luck in recent history has done a better job assembling a team than one with 2 first overall and 2 second overall picks since 2014?only time will tell. Right now, it looks like Yzerman has made some very good decisions. Holland, as well, when it comes to Bertuzzi, Larkin and Hronek.

If we’d had a Christmas this year (just a very weird year) I probably would have looked for something with the #23 or Moritz Seider’s Griffin’s bobblehead. (Pricey on eBay). Luckily, PRS decided to wait to release it’s newest John Mayer electric guitar or I likely would have sold an organ to get one (so beautiful). The past few years have sucked, in general. But, this year has had some highlights for Red Wings fans. Please soak them in. You never know what changes will happen, and champions aren’t built overnight.

Be good to yourselves and each other. It was a fun game tonight. Worth celebrating.

First Period Goals:

At the beginning of the year I’d “predicted” that Detroit’s top line could get 70 goals. That was with Vrana at 30 and Larkin and Bertuzzi at 20. 38 games in the revamped top line has 44 goals. More than a goal per game. And part of that has seen injury as well as a 19 year old join the fray. Not even halfway in, that 70 doesn’t seem like the “joke” I was told it was. I was told that Bert and Larkin were “clowns” who couldn’t break 20. Hey, we all get it wrong sometimes. It’s nice to see that line clicking. It’s nice to see Fabbri in double digits again. It’s nice to see the team moving forward.

Bertuzzi is knocking on the door of 20 and has 30 points in 31 games as he scores his 18th with helpers from Larkin (17) and Zadina (7). When Bert and Larkin are “feeling it” there are a lot of “pinball goals”. Credit to Zadina for working the boards well again.

Fabbri hits double digits as Bertuzzi gets another point tonight plus another apple for the surprise rookie. Seider had a nice touch and moved the puck well, but there are no 3rd assists in the game. The power play breaks through as Bert makes a crisp pass after a nice dish from Raymond to a wide open Fabbri.

No second period Red Wings goals.

Third Period Goals:

It’s been a tough goal scoring stretch for Lucas Raymond, but he continues to rack up the points. Well, 18 seconds into the third period he snapped a 15 game drought and got his second point of the night. Larkin won a faceoff back to Seider who moved the puck to Namestnikov (now with 18 points in 38 games). Larkin then takes a pass and finds Raymond far side for a tap in. The 19 year old now has 32 points in 39 games. Unreal.

Another player who has worked his way into keeping a job is Rasmussen. No, he hasn’t lived up to his first round status. But, instead of just falling off he did everything the organization asked him to do. Springing out of the penalty box and receiving a pass for a 1 on 0 chance. He seems faster some nights, and shows up to play. Tonight, he was rewarded with his 4th goal (another assist for Bertuzzi which puts him at a goal per game) and an apple for Hronek (20 points for the Dman).
