The Carolina Hurricanes picked up a 4-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks at home today.

Joey Keane suited up for his first game of the season with Jaccob Slavin out in COVID protocol, while Jordan Martinook returned to action with the Hurricanes for the first time in over a month.

The Hurricanes got off to a good start and opened the scoring on a power play about midway through the frame, as Teuvo Teravainen set up Sebastian Aho for a one-timer. However, Bo Horvat tied the game with an excellent shot a few minutes later, taking a pass for a zone entry and firing a shot past Andersen. Overall it was a pretty strong opening period for Carolina, who outshot the Canucks 12-7.

Carolina managed to take the lead back early in the second period, as Vincent Trocheck finished off a nice passing play, when Andrei Svechnikov won the puck down low and got it to Martin Necas, who put it to Trocheck in front. Then just a few minutes later, Andrei Svechnikov managed to bounce off a big hit and get the puck to Martin Necas, who went in with the puck on a rush and wired a perfect shot past Thatcher Demko to make it a 3-1 lead, which is where the scored remained through 40 minutes.

In the third period, Steven Lorentz managed to make it 4-1, getting his stick on a shot from Brady Skjei for an excellent tip-in goal. While the Canucks generated a lot of shots in the third period, Carolina did a good job limiting chances and hung on for the win.

This was a huge bounce-back game for the Hurricanes, following their 6-0 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. They were much better defensively, giving up far fewer chances off the rush and showing more urgency in their own end.

That said, Frederik Andersen had to be good as well, stopping 30 shots in the win. I also thought Joey Keane looked fairly good in his season debut, despite the limited role.

Carolina’s next game comes on Tuesday against the Boston Bruins.
