Marc-Andre Fleury and Patrick Kane teamed up to kick the extra point in the shootout to propel the Blackhawks to victory after the Islanders forced overtime with 2.3 seconds left in regulation. After losing to the Rangers the night before, the Hawks escaped New York with a few more points in the standings.

Fleury maintained his shootout dominance as illustrated by the tweets above and below. Elite goaltenders like Fleury play their part to keep their teams in it to the end. That's where the rest of the team needs to step up. This time it was another elite player in Kane who notched his 2nd shootout GWG in 4 days.

Game Notes

* Fleury improved his season record to 7-9-0 and his save percentage of .913 matches his career average.

* Ian Mitchell has been solid in his return to the Hawks lineup by conscientiously defending the crease, maintaining inside positioning, managing tight gaps, and separating puck from player; plus, he's been moving the puck swiftly when patrolling the offensive blueline.

* Despite getting stonewalled a few times, Kirby Dach still rattled off high-danger shots and made good decisions to generate offense; also, he's generally been at the right place at the right time in all zones.

* Along with Dach, Dylan Strome exerted effort positively to create chances with his sleek passing and increasing compete level to make plays up and down the ice.

* Josiah Slavin has been steady during his cup of coffee making consistently good reads and displaying patience to hold onto the puck while scanning options or placing the puck in a safe area of the ice if under pressure.

IceHogs Updates

Wyatt Kalynuk and Cliff Watson rejoining the IceHogs is much needed as Jakub Galvas got injured in Saturday's game and is out indefinitely plus Mitchell is staying with the Blackhawks. The Rockford blueline will look different in upcoming games, perhaps something like this:

Beaudin - Kalynuk
Phillips - Regula
Stanton - Krys
Watson

The Hogs start a homestand this Wednesday against their fierce rival Iowa Wild then host the Henderson Silver Knights for the first time ever on Friday and Saturday. After next weekend, the Hogs have a full week off before a road trip down to Austin to face the Texas Stars.
