The blue line assembled by Bergevin was built for the playoffs by his own admission, it was big, it was punishing, and it clearly benefited from the traditional referee leniency in the last Cup run. In the regular season though, its flaws were exposed, the lack of a transition game was painfully obvious, and it looked outdated.

Clearly, Gorton is more about today’s style of game, and he chose to pick up defenseman Kale Clague off waivers today. A 23-year-old left shooting defenseman who was described as a wiry two-way blueliner with quickness and an exceptional understanding of his position in scouting reports in his draft year. The Kings had drafted him in the 2nd round in 2016, 51st overall and since then, he got 33 NHL games of experience under his belt during which he gathered 11 points (all assists), a -11 rating and 8 penalty minutes.

With Drew Doughty returning from injured reserved this week, the Kings had a clogged-up roster on the blue line and needed to make a decision. They opted to waive Clague for the second time this season (he went unclaimed at the start of the season). With the Kings, he played nearly 18 minutes a night and was relatively productive with 5 assists in 11 games.

This year, Clague is making $761 000 and will be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights this summer. With the decimated state of the blue line, we can expect to see Clague in the line-up sooner rater than later. Shea Weber, Joel Edmundson, Jeff Petry, Sami Niku (Covid) and Alexander Romanov (day to day with a broken nose) are all injured right now so there’s a spot to be had on the Habs’ blueline, let’s see what Clague can make of that opportunity.
