There’s not much point running through last night’s events. Let’s just say that the 4-1 Colorado score line tells the story of the game down to a T. The Avalanche has got one of the best offenses of the league and it showed last night, they were skating around a Habs team that looked lost and helpless. Not only that, but the Habs only managed to get 20 shots on goal, in the first period, they got a total of 4 shots, even though they enjoyed 2 power plays during which they were unable to get a single puck on net.

Jeff Petry was once more atrocious and with Christmas around the corner, he could benefit from a starring role in Dicken’s Christmas Carol, perhaps he could be visited by the ghosts of seasons’ past and they could show him the error of his way just like the ghosts do for Scrooge. Watching such a good defenseman self-destruct is no doubt painful but it was even more painful to witness a particular moment in last night’s game. At one stage, a fan, we can assume completely fed up with not only the losses, but the lack of efforts committed the irreparable, they threw their Habs’ jersey and hat on the ice. Let that sink in, that is Maple Leafs’ fan level shame, I always thought that the Canadiens’ faithful would never get there but there we are. Habs fans have thrown in the towel.

The Canadiens are playing so badly that it’s reached a stage where it’s better to laugh about it then cry. At the end of the 1st period, Montreal got an offensive zone face-off with 7 seconds to go and ever the optimistic, Marc Denis said that was more than enough to get a good shot on goal and who knows maybe score. While I’d agree with that statement for many teams, I just chuckled last night, the Canadiens need 20 minutes to get 4 shots on goal, how unlikely are they to created much of anything in 7 seconds?

Last night, 26 years to the day since Patrick Roy last played for la Sainte-Flanelle, his name could be heard in the Bell Centre stands. They weren’t jeering the former Hab goaltender they were imploring Geoff Molson to give him a chance to right this ship. It remains to be seen if the Habs owner will be receptive to their plea, but something has to be done and it has to be done fast. Someone needs to explain to Dominique Ducharme that is role no longer is to salvage this train wreck of a season, it’s to invest time and effort into developing the Canadiens’ young players. Cole Caufield doesn’t belong on the 4th line. He may not be playing well but he’s not going to learn by playing there and that should be crystal clear to anyone.

Gallagher and Niku have received a second positive covid test and will therefore be out at least 10 days, while Josh Anderson was injured last night and will miss 2-4 weeks. As for Alex Romanov, he broke his nose when he collided with Ryan Poehling while landing a hit on Cale Makar…When it rain, it pours as they say….
