The Carolina Hurricanes dropped their second game in a row last night, falling 4-1 to the Dallas Stars.

With Tony DeAngelo and Brett Pesce added to the COVID protocol list, joining Ethan Bear, the entire right side of the defense group was out. As a result, Jalen Chatfield and Max Lajoie were called up in their absence.

The Stars opened the scoring just over a minute into the game, as Roope Hintz followed up on his own rebound and roofed it over Frederik Andersen. While the Hurricanes would outshoot Dallas 13-7 in the frame, the score remained 1-0 heading into the intermission.

The Hurricanes did manage to start generating more quality chances in the second period, but couldn’t capitalize. The Stars then went up 2-0 later in the period, as Joe Pavelski fed Roope Hintz on a 2-on-1, who beat Andersen to extend the lead.

In the third period, Pavelski tipped in a point shot to increase the lead to 3-0. Jesperi Kotkaniemi would get the Hurricanes on the board late, but the Stars responded quickly, as Hintz picked up a hat trick with an empty netter, to secure the win.

While the Hurricanes severely outshot the Stars, I would say that the Hurricanes didn’t necessarily out chance the Stars by that same ratio. Holtby made a ridiculous series of saves near the end of the game that probably put him in ‘Save of the Year’ contention, but at that point the score was 4-1.

As was the case with the game against the Capitals though, the Hurricanes did play well enough to win. Over their last two games, Carolina has three goals on 72 shots and despite the losses, there shouldn’t be any reason for concern, especially considering they managed this while down half of their defense group.

The Hurricanes will look to rebound tomorrow at home against the Ottawa Senators.
