The New York Islanders played three games in four days from Thursday to Sunday, picking up four of a possible six points.

The Islanders had a big 6-2 win in Montreal on Thursday, in a game that was relatively close until New York ran away with it in the second period. Brock Nelson picked up four goals in the win, while Ilya Sorokin made 36 saves, but had a potential shutout sunk by two late goals.

Sorokin did get his shutout the following game though, as New York put together a really strong defensive performance against the Jets. They did a great job limiting quality scoring chances, on route to a 2-0 victory.

They did fall short against the Minnesota Wild, however, in Semyon Varlamov’s first start of the season. It was a good game for the first 40 minutes and the Islanders had the lead going into the final frame, but a rough third period resulted in a 5-2 loss.

Even though the last period against the Wild was pretty rough and it’s frustrating to come away from that game without a point, it was another solid stretch of games for the Islanders.

Seeing Brock Nelson and Anders Lee come alive in the last few games was key as well, as the duo has accounted for eight of the team’s last 10 goals and Lee in particular was really struggling to produce.

Getting Semyon Varlamov back was great too and he performed well in the loss, facing some difficult chances. His reaction time did look a bit slow at times and his rebound control wasn’t necessarily great but he faced 39 shots and was playing on the second half of a back-to-back on the road. Overall, it was a strong first game back.

The Islanders have now gone 5-1-2 in their last eight games, picking up 12 of a possible 16 points in that time. It’s been a great stretch overall and New York is now down to just three games left in their massive road trip.
