After 5 consecutive losses, the Canadiens finally managed to put one in the win column, better late than never as they say, but that was considerably later than most would have liked. Detroit had won it’s last 4 games against the Habs, but tonight, Dominique Ducharme’s men were determined to win. So determined in fact that halfway through the game, it was 5-1 for the Bleu, Blanc, Rouge and the Bell Centre crowd was already singing “Olé, Olé, Olé”.
The Wings opened the score 5 minutes into the first period but for once this year, it didn’t look like a punch to the gut, the Canadiens stayed on their skates and kept on working and it finally paid off. Chiarot, who had taken the penalty that allowed the Wings to score, scored the Habs first before Hoffman, Dvorak and Perreault all got their first wearing the Sainte-Flanelle. Perreault enjoyed it so much that he added another 2 (including an empty netter) and became the first Quebecer to score a hat trick for the Habs on home turf since Vincent Damphousse did it…back in the 90s.
It was a great team effort and the changes to the line-up paid off. In his first game, Sami Niku got a couple of helpers and finished the game with a +3 rating. Meanwhile, Ben Chiarot got a pair of points, blocked 4 shots, landed 3 hits and even managed 2 takeaways. Up front, the Caufield-Perreault-Toffoli line was much more visible, Caufield was much more active tonight and had an assist to show for his trouble, just like Tyler Toffoli. The line is starting to show some chemistry and that’s excellent news for Ducharme. In net, Jake Allen was solid, the only goal he conceded was a power play one and from then on, he was flawless finishing the night with a .963 save percentage.
With this 6-1 win, the Cage au Sports will have to dish out a lot of free wings as the fans will no doubt make the most of that 5 Habs goal, 8 free wings offer and head out to celebrate the first victory of the season. I know, it was only the Red Wings, but the Canadiens often struggle against them and in the current circumstance, this is a huge result.
The Habs will now head out west to face the Kraken on Tuesday, the Sharks on Thursday, the Kings and Philip Danault on Saturday and the Ducks on Sunday. A perfect record on that trip would bring them back to .500, but that seems like a huge ask right now, baby steps as they say…Joel Edmundson is now back in Montreal, he won’t join the team on the road trip, but once its back in Montreal, he should be ready to join in.
Après 5 défaites consécutives, les Canadiens ont finalement réussi à inscrire une victoire à leur fiche, vaut mieux tard que jamais comme on dit, mais cette victoire est venue beaucoup plus tard que ce que tous souhaitaient. Détroit avait gagné les 4 derniers matchs entre les deux rivaux, mais ce soir, les hommes de Dominique Ducharme étaient déterminés à gagner. Tellement déterminés en fait qu’à mi-chemin dans le match, la marque était de 5-1 pour le Bleu, Blanc, Rouge et que les “Olé, olé, olé” retentissaient déjà dans le Centre Bell.
Les Red Wings ont ouverts la marque après 5 minutes en première période mais pour une fois cette année, ça n’a pas eu l’air d’un direct en plein ventre du CH, l’équipe n’a pas plié les genoux et a continué de travailler, ça a fini par être payant. Chiarot, qui avait écopé de la punition qui avait mené au but en supériorité de Détroit, a marqué le premier but du Tricolore avant qu’Hoffman, Dvorak et Perreault marquent tous leur premier dans l’uniforme de la Sainte-Flanelle. Perreault a tellement aimé l’expérience, qu’il a remis ça 2 fois de plus dans le match (incluant un but dans un filet désert) et est devenu le premier Québécois depuis Vincent Damphousse dans les années 1990 à réussir un tour du chapeau à la maison pour le CH.
Ce fut un très bel effort d’équipe et les modifications à l’alignement ont porté fruit. À son premier match dans l’uniforme de la Sainte-Flanelle, Sami Niku a récolté 2 passes et terminé le match avec un différentiel de +3. Pendant ce temps, Ben Chiarot a amassé 2 points, bloqué 4 tirs, appliqué 3 mises en échec et à même réussi à déposséder l’adversaire 2 fois. À l’avant, la ligne Caufield-Perreault-Toffoli a été beaucoup plus visible, Caufield a été beaucoup plus actif et en mouvement et à récolter une passe pour ses efforts, tout comme Toffoli d’ailleurs. Le trio commence à développer une certaine chimie, ce qui est une excellente nouvelle pour Ducharme. Dans le filet, Jake Allen a été solide, le seul but qu’il a accordé était en désavantage numérique et il a été parfait par la suite, avec un pourcentage d’arrêt de .963.
Avec cette victoire de 6-1, La Cage aux Sports devra distribuer beaucoup d’ailes gratuites puisque les partisans voudront certainement profiter de l’offre 5 buts du CH 8 ailes gratuites pour aller célébrer cette première victoire. Je sais, c’est seulement les Red Wings, mais les Canadiens ont souvent bien de la difficulté contre Détroit et dans les circonstances, c’est une très grosse victoire.
Les Habs se dirigeront maintenant dans l’ouest pour affronter le Kraken mardi, les Sharks jeudi, les Kings et Philip Danault samedi et les Ducks dimanche. Une fiche parfaite pendant ce voyage les ramènerait à une moyenne de .500, mais ça semble être une énorme commande présentement, une chose à la fois comme on dit… Joel Edmundson est maintenant de retour à Montréal, il ne fera pas le voyage mais quand ils seront de retour, il devrait être prêt à revenir.
