Last night felt different, it started well and the Canadiens seemed to have a spring in their skating, at first at least. About 5 minutes in and on the power play, Brendan Gallagher managed to get the puck past Frederik Andersen and the Bell Centre erupted in cheers, not for long though as Carolina challenged the goal for goaltender interference and it was overturned. From then on, the Habs looked like they had been stopped in their tracks, they seemed to be shell shock, lacking any kind of cohesion and failing to create anything whatsoever. They went from being fully pumped to skating aimlessly struggling with zone entries, zone exits and well, pretty much with everything.
They did eventually come back to life, but by then the Hurricanes were leading 2-0 and the damage had been done really. At least, Tyler Toffoli scored his first goal of the season with assists from Suzuki and Drouin on the power play, I guess that’s something to build on. Bottom line is though, at the final buzzer, it was 4-1 Carolina, and the Canadiens became the first Stanley Cup finalists to lose their first 5 games of the following season. That is not the kind of history Montreal is usually known for.
It must have been a special night for Jesperi Kotkaniemi though, in his return to Montreal, he scored the Canes’ insurance goal and they left with the 2 points. As expected, he was copiously booed by the fans whenever he came on the ice or touched the puck, I was in attendance and personally, I don’t think that was actual hatred directed towards the young Finn. No, what the fans were doing there was showing their team they were there, desperately trying to give them some energy to feed off from.
With a 0-5 record and a grand total of 0 points in the standings, the Canadiens got themselves in quite a hole and it won’t be easy to dig themselves out of it. They are of course dead last in the Atlantic division and Saturday’s visitors a the Bell Centre, the Detroit’s Red Wings who were expected to be easy preys for the Canadiens are looking pretty good right now with 5 points in 4 games. The Habs will have their work cut out for them if they are to avoid going down 0-6.
Hier soir, on avait l’impression que ce serait différent, les Canadiens semblaient avoir un plus haut niveau d’énergie, en début de match du moins. Après environ 5 minutes de jeu et sur l’avantage numérique, Brendan Gallagher a réussi à déjouer Frederik Andersen et le Centre Bell a explosé de joie, pas pour longtemps par contre puisque les Hurricanes ont contesté le but et ont eu gain de cause. À partir ce de moment-là, le Tricolore a semblé être arrêté dans son élan et complétement abasourdi, sans aucune cohésion et n’arrivant pas à créer quoi que ce soit, semblant patiner sans but et n’arrivant pas à réussir d’entrées ou de sorties de zone ou quoique ce soit en fait.
Éventuellement, ils se sont réveillés, mais le damage était malheureusement déjà fait, les Hurricanes menaient déjà 2-0. Au moins, Tyler Toffoli est arrivé à marquer son premier but de l’année sur des passes de Suzuki et Drouin en avantage numérique, c’est quelque chose sur quoi bâtir au moins. Malheureusement, il n’en demeure pas moins que quand le sifflet de la fin s’est fait entendre, c’était 4-1 Caroline et les Canadiens sont devenus par le fait même la première ce équipe finaliste de la Coupe Stanley a perdre leur 5 premiers matchs d’affilé la saison suivante. Ce n’est pas le genre d’histoire que Montréal veut écrire.
Ça a dû être une soirée spéciale pour Jesperi Kotkaniemi puisque dans son retour à Montréal, il a marqué le but d’assurance des Canes et ils sont repartis avec les 2 points. Comme on s’y attendais, le finlandais a été copieusement hué par les fans. J’étais sur place et je ne crois pas que c’était vraiment de la haine dirigée vers le jeune homme. Non, pour moi, les fans tentaient de leur mieux de montrer à son équipe qu’elle était là, essayant désespérément de leur donner un regain d’énergie.
Avec une fiche de 0-5 et un grand total de 0 point au classement, les Canadiens se retrouvent dans un immense trou et ce ne sera pas facile de s’en sortir. Bien sûr ils sont derniers dans la division Atlantique et les visiteurs de samedi au Centre Bell, les Red Wings de Détroit, s’en sortent bien à date avec 5 points en 4 matchs. LE CH devra travailler fort pour ne pas se retrouver avec une fiche de 0-6.
