Yesterday, Marc Bergevin decided to speak to the media in what was essentially a damage control operation. In a volatile market like Montreal, losing your first 4 matches will result in the panic button being swiftly pressed and the GM wanted to try and settle everyone down. Essentially, he won’t be making a change just for the sake of making a change, he believes in the team he’s built, and the players just need to perform as they were expected to. Secondly, he says that in a perfect world, he would have already signed an extension and wants to remain in Montreal and finally, he confirmed what I had speculated about on Monday, Joel Edmundson is back in Manitoba dealing with his father’s bout with cancer and he will be away for an undetermined time. All we can do is hope for the best in Edmundson’s case and welcome him back with open arms when he’s ready to come back.

Tonight’s match-up will be a bit special for the Habs as they’ll face their 3rd overall pick in 2018 for the first time. Now a Carolina Hurricane after signing a $6.1 M contract offer sheet, Jesperi Kotkaniemi will be on the Canes’ first line as a left winger tonight. Since signing said offer sheet, Kotkaniemi has been very vocal about how his development could have been better handled in Montreal and he appears to be very happy that the Habs didn’t match the offer. It will be interesting to see how the fans react tonight, will they cheer KK in his return, or will he be getting the Chara or Kreider treatment? Time will tell.

Meanwhile, coach Dominique Ducharme has made some changes to his line-up since the 5-0 mauling his team suffered at the hands of the Sharks. For the last 2 days, these have been the lines and pairing:

Drouin-Dvorak-Anderson
Hoffman-Suzuki-Gallagher
Toffoli-Perreault-Caufield
Lehkonen-Evans-Armia

Kulak-Petry
Chiarot-Wideman
Romanov-Savard

Finally, the heart attack inducing pairing of Chiarot and Savard has been split, by the coach I mean and not by the opponents’ top lines. As a result, though, Wideman could be seeing more ice-time which is a concern, but you can only play the cards you’ve been dealt. It’s also noteworthy that Romanov is now lower in the pecking order than him and that Kulak and Petry, the two most mobile blueliners, are still playing together.

Up front, Evans is back on the 4th line which isn’t surprising considering that he has not been able to produce much scoring chances even when flanked with Gallagher and Toffoli. Speaking of Gallagher, he has looked lost without his 2 former linemates and he could greatly benefit from playing with Suzuki, if the latter can manage to handle the opponents’ best defenders. As for Cole Caufield, his presence on Perreault’s line should allow him to get away from the tougher match-up, but will there be any chemistry with the former Jets played and Tyler Toffoli?

So many questions and so very few answers right now… Tonight’s game starts at 7:00 PM and if Tuesday is anything to go by, don’t be late, you could miss a couple of goals.
