Saturday night, Carey Price and Shea Weber weren’t there to hear the fans cheer when their picture was showed to the crowd, as expected. Someone else wasn’t though, Joel Edmundson. Injured since the start of training camp, Edmundson is expected to return to practice next week but is absence is still weird. Other injured players such as Hoffman and Byron were there to greet the crowd but not number 44.
This morning, the Canadiens took their team picture and try as I may to spot Edmundson on the footage which has turned up on Twitter, I just can’t, it really looks like he’s not there. Could it mean that his absence will be longer than expected? After all, only the other long term injured players missed Saturday night and this morning’s picture…This afternoon the Habs finally announced that Edmundson is at home dealing with a family matter, perhaps it has to do with his father’s fight with cancer, hopefully, it hasn’t taken a turn for the worst.
After the photo was taken, the Canadiens practiced, and it looks like change may be coming. Both Jake Allen and Jake Evans weren’t on the ice, it’s a therapy day for Evans and Allen will skate on his own with goaltending coach Eric Raymond. Those were the lines on display:

Hoffman-Brooks-Gallagher
Lehkonen-Perreault-Armia
Nice to see Hoffman finally practicing on a regular line, and hopefully, he will also be put to good use on the power play. Not so good that Toffoli is back with Suzuki and Caufield, but you can hardly put last year’s scoring leader on the 4th line. Dominique Ducharme said that Evans might not be ready to go tomorrow, if he is though, I’d really like to see him center Hoffman and Gallagher while Brooks gets a shot on the 4th line between Lehkonen and Armia. Judging by what was on display though, I’m guessing the coach would do a straight swap with Brooks if Evans was indeed ready.
At the blue line, there are some changes as well, but the most worrying duo is still intact:

Chiarot-Savard
Kulak-Niku
Wideman
Evan though Wideman has a goal this season, I’m glad to see him as the odd man out. His defensive mistakes and poor decision making were hard to watch on Saturday night. With Niku no longer on injured reserve though, the Habs have had to put Alex Belzile on waivers. It would be surprising to lose him on waivers, but stranger things have happened. If he clears, he’ll once again be an important player for the Rocket.
Samedi soir, Carey Price et Shea Weber n’était pas là pour entendre les fans acclamer leur photo quand elle a été mise sur l’écran géant, tel qu’on s’y attendait d’ailleurs. Mais quelqu’un d’autre n’était pas là, Joel Edmundson. Blessé depuis le début du camp, Edmundson devrait recommencer à pratiquer la semaine prochaine, mais son absence est quand même étrange. Les autres joueurs blessés comme Hoffman et Byron étaient sur place pour saluer la foule, mais pas le numéro 44.
Ce matin, les Canadiens ont pris leur photo d’équipe et même en scrutant les images qui ont fait surface sur le web, je n’arrive pas à repérer Edmundson, il semblerait vraiment qu’il n’est pas là. Est-ce que ça pourrait vouloir dire que son absence sera plus longue que prévu? Après tout, seuls les blessés à long terme ont raté le match de samedi et la photo de ce matin…Cet après-midi, les Habs ont finalement annoncé qu’Edmundson est à la maison en train de s’occuper d’un problème familial, peut-être est-ce relié au cancer de son père, espérons que la maladie n’ait pas gagné de terrain.
Après la prise de la photo, les Canadiens ont pratiqué et semblerait qu’il y ait du changement à l’horizon. Tant Jake Allen que Jake Evans brillaient par leur absence, c’est jour de thérapie pour Evans et quant à Allen, il devait patiner seul avec l’entraîneur des gardiens Eric Raymon après la pratique. Voici les lignes qui étaient sur la glace:

Ça fait du bien d’enfin voir Hoffman sur une ligne régulière, et espérons qu’il sera également utilisé à bon escient sur le jeu de puissance. Je suis moins heureuse de voir Toffoli de retour à la gauche de Suzuki et Caufield, mais Ducharme pourrait difficilement mettre son meilleur marqueur de la dernière année sur la 4e ligne. Le coach a dit qu’Evans ne sera peut-être pas prêt à jouer demain (il ne souffre toutefois pas d’une commotion), s’il l’est, j’aimerais bien le voir flanqué d’Hoffman et Gallagher pendant que Brooks piloterait la 4e ligne entre Lehkonen et Armia. Si on se fie à ce qu’on voyait sur la glace cependant, les chances sont que l’entraîneur se contentera de remettre Evans au centre du 3e trio aux dépends de Brooks.
À la ligne bleue, il y a bien quelques changements aussi, mais la paire la plus inquiétante demeure intacte :

Même si Wideman a trouvé le fond du filet une fois cette saison, je suis bien contente de le voir à l’écart. Ses erreurs défensives et son manque de jugement étaient parfois difficiles à regarder samedi soir. Avec Niku prêt à revenir au jeu, les Habs ont dû soumettre Alex Belzile au ballotage. Il serait surprenant qu’il soit réclamé mais des choses plus étranges se sont déjà produites. Si aucune équipe ne le réclame, il sera encore une fois un joueur d’importance pour le Rocket.
