Rumors of the Toronto Maple Leafs playing in an outdoor game were confirmed on Thursday, as the 2022 Heritage Classic will feature the Blue and White against the Buffalo Sabres on March 13, 2022 at Tim Hortons Field, in Hamilton, Ontario.

The game will be considered a home game for the Sabres, will be played at 3pm EST at the home of the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats and will be broadcast on TNT in the US and Sportsnet in Canada.

“We are excited to announce that we will be presenting another Tim Hortons Heritage Classic this season,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a league press release. “When the Toronto Maple Leafs meet the Buffalo Sabres at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, we again will honor Canada’s preeminent role in the history of our game while renewing a great and longstanding NHL rivalry.

In addition, by inviting the first U.S.-based team to a Heritage Classic, we will celebrate the greater Golden Horseshoe region as the home of so many fans of both the Leafs and Sabres.”

Perhaps playing the Sabres away from the city of Buffalo will improve Toronto’s fortunes, as they have struggled against their QEW rival since their entry into the league in 1970.

The game marks one of the few times that the Leafs will be on TV in the US next season. The only time Toronto will be on ESPN or ESPN+ will be on Mon. March 7, 2022 vs. the Columbus Blue Jackets, while Turner will broadcast four games featuring the Leafs; Wed. November 24 vs. Los Angeles, Wed. January 12 vs. Arizona, Wed. January 19 vs. New York Rangers, and the Heritage Classic.

The Maple Leafs prospects opened the Traverse City Tournament on Thursday with a 4-3 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at Centre Ice Arena.

Alex Steeves, Semyon Der-Argushintsev, and Matt Hellickson scored for Toronto, who scored the opening two goals but surrendered the lead twice and lost on a Josh Dunne overtime goal.

Steeves, who scored three goals in the Blue and White scrimmages last weekend did not play in the third period due to an undisclosed injury.
