The New York Islanders have signed defenseman Erik Gustafsson to a professional tryout agreement, according to Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston.

Gustafsson is 29 years old and has played in 250 career NHL games with four different teams. He opened this past season with the Philadelphia Flyers before being dealt to the Montreal Canadiens and scored a total of 12 points in 29 regular season games.

Bringing Gustafsson to training camp on a PTO could hint that the Islanders may not be acquiring another left-handed defenseman before the start of the season. While Gustafsson would come at a cheap price if they did end up signing him, he’s not necessarily an ideal fit with the Islanders and wouldn’t be able to take on anywhere near as large of a role as Nick Leddy did. Still, it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.
