The Canadiens’ first line is no more, both Phillip Danault and Tomas Tatar have finished their tenure in Montreal, the former has signed with LA and the latter is rumored to be signing with New Jersey. As a result, Nick Suzuki will be the Canadiens’ de facto number on center unless something big happens in the coming weeks.
Through the playoffs, there was no denying the budding chemistry between Suzuki and Caufield and even though the rookie doesn’t have much experience, I’m a big believer in the “If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it” approach and he should slide on number 14’s right wing. On the other side, neither Toffoli or Anderson seemed to be a perfect fit during the playoffs and that’s were I’d try Hoffman.
If Kotkaniemi inherits the 2nd line center gig, he could then finally find himself with very offensively talented wingers. We’ve seen that Toffoli can play quite well on the right wing and Anderson would be more than happy to remain on his natural right wing. I don’t expect either of them would have an issue with that, they would still be playing in the top 6, get plenty of ice-time and scoring opportunity.
For those who believe they may not take kindly to being usurped by a new guy who is rumored to have character issue, I think reading the TVA Sports interview with Samuel Montembeault might help change your mind. The young Panthers’ netminder was Hoffman’s teammate for 2 years in Florida and said he was adored by everyone in the locker-room. Montembeault credits him with a great sense of humor and adds that he has a great scoring touch.
Hoffman isn’t perfect though, his commitment to the defensive game is not always as it should be, and the goalie said that he’s not going to be the guy who clocks the most shots and that his will to win is not always as intense as it should be. We’ll see how he’ll adapt to the Canadiens’ system, but I definitely think it’s worth giving him a shot on the top line.

Résultat? Nick Suzuki deviendra le premier centre des Canadiens, à moins bien sûr que quelque chose de gros survienne dans les prochaines semaines.
Tout au long des séries, im était impossible de nier la chimie qui commençait à se développer entre Suzuki et Caufield et même si la recrue manque encore d’expérience, je suis fermement de l’école : “Si ce n’est pas brisé, pas besoin de le réparer”. Conséquemment, Caufield devrait rester à la droite de Suzuki. Quant au flanc gauche, ni Toffoli, ni Anderson ne semblait être la solution parfaite pour compléter le trio et c’est là que j’essayerais Hoffman en début de saison.
Si Kotkaniemi hérite du rôle de 2e centre, il pourrait finalement jouer avec des ailiers ayant du talent offensif. Nous avons vu que Toffoli se débrouille très bien à gauche et Anderson serait plus qu’heureux de rester sur son aile habituelle. Je ne crois pas que l’un d’eux serait insatisfait, ils resteraient dans le top 6, ils auraient du temps de jeu à profusion et des chances de marquer.
Pour ceux qui croient qu’ils n’aimeraient pas se faire déloger par un joueur au caractère douteux, il pourrait vous être utile de lire l’entrevue de TVA Sports avec Samuel Montembeault, ça pourrait vous faire changer d’idée. Le jeune gardien des Panthers a été le coéquipier d’Hoffman pendant 2 ans en Floride et rapporte qu’il était adoré de tous dans le vestiaire. Il ajoute qu’il possède tout un sens de l’humour et une touche de marqueur incroyable.
Hoffman n’est toutefois pas parfait, son dévouement à l’aspect défensif du jeu n’est pas toujours ce qu’il devrait être et le gardien disait également qu’il n’est pas le joueur qui bloquera le plus de tirs et que sa volonté de vaincre n’était pas toujours aussi intense qu’elle ne devrait l’être. On vera comment il s’adaptera au système de jeu du CH, mais je crois que ça vaut la peine de lui donner une chance sur la première ligne.
