Today at 5:00 PM is the deadline for players who wish to do so to file for arbitration. The sole player who was arbitration eligible for the Habs this year was Artturi Lehkonen, but Marc Bergevin managed to sign him yesterday to a team friendly contract.

His last contract was a 2-year deal which paid him $2.4 M per season signed back in July 2019. Since then, he had a 27-point season in year one and a 13-point one in 47 games this past season. He never got back near the 18-goal mark which was the highlight of his rookie season and he’s become known as Artturi “almost” Lehkonen. The chances are there for the Finn, but too often, he fails to bury them.

Even if he’s not on the scoresheet that often, Lehkonen’s work ethic is second to none and he will always give his all for the team. Whatever he’s asked to do, he’ll do to the best of his ability, and he knows how to step up, after all he did score the OT game-winning goal that eliminated the Golden Knights on June 24th.

While he did fall a bit out of favors when Dominique Ducharme took over as head coach, injuries and Jonathan Drouin’s untimely break allowed him to get right back in there and stick, all the way through the Stanley Cup final. Unsurprisingly, Bergevin extended him a qualifying offer in the amount of $2,300,000 and yesterday, on the eve of arbitration filing deadline yesterday, Lehkonen finally decided to sign it. Which means that he took a $100,000 pay cut, does this mean he understands that the Canadiens are facing a bit of a cap crunch? Or is it a one-year prove yourself deal to get more? Or could it mean he’s not really part of the Habs’ plans in the future? Time will tell but for now, he’s very much a member of this Canadiens’ team and once his contract expires, he’ll once again be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights. As for Marc Bergevin, the only RFA he has left to put under contract is Jesperi Kotkaniemi who isn’t eligible to arbitration.
